Now that image of Snape is going to stick with *me.* I like it. I also liked Harry's voice - a little more intelligent and sensitive than the usual clueless Harry one reads.
But still, watching him inhale, then slip his free hand into his robes to warm it from the Autumn chill, I felt hypnotized. I wanted to see more of this side. This part of Snape that made him Human, almost Muggle, spitting the bits of tobacco from his lips while his gaze traveled the scenery without clear aim. It made me want to know him, know what else he did that made him Human.
Oh what a lovely practice piece. The imagery was perfect and Harry was intelligently reflective instead of a buffoon. Snapes flustered reaction to being spotted - just wonderful. *gushes* Thank you for such a sensitive piece of writing.
Upon reading that, I caught this scene in my head of OwlMail Call and Snape receiving a pretty little package, the contents of which are an ornately engraved silver cigarette case and lighter set. The engraving a stylistic 'Double S' that looks remarkably like entwined snakes.
Somewhat related to that, I was discussing The Sims with my daughter tonight (she's a recent Roller Coaster Tycoon addict; and damn, she's GOOD at it) and Harry Potter Sims skins came up in conversation. She asked how there could be a Snape character in The Sims and I said, "Easy. Someone just made a Snape skin."
Ohhh, I like this one!!! I liked the other one, too, I just haven't commented yet. I was too embarrassed, because I.. err. GODS. I have never replied to a lovely, lovely reply I received from you after I'd written you an e-mail. I've been carrying the print-out of it around with me for over a year now (I'm serious. It's in a folder in my bag, which I always carry with me.) because I wanted to write back, it's just. Guh. Hmm. Too much real life stuff got into the way and.. No, that's not really an excuse, is it?
Hmm. Anyway, I wanted to say it's great to have you back. And if it's only a bit. :)) And congrats on your new job!!! And.. I'm looking forward to more fic/ficlets/whatever. And.. maybe.. also.. art.. ?! And.. I will write back. Because I still want to. (It's funny. In my e-mail back then, I also wrote I was reading Dracula. I never finished it though. Now I have to know the book's contents for a university course. Hmm.. It seems I'm picking some things up where I left off last year.)
Gorgeous. It's such a simple thing, but the way it was revealed here completely shows what an intimate look it is into Snape's person. It's done wonderfully -- that it's an act that screams total human fragility is quite right, and I'm really glad you wrote this piece the way you did.

Which sounds an awful lot like "snakeskin".
