Captain Treville (The Musketeers) - an appreciation

Apr 24, 2015 21:45

While "The Musketeers" focuses on d'Artagnan and his three best buddies, the BBC version of Captain Jean-Armand Treville has become my favorite character of the show.

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAS! TREVILLE! asthenie_vd April 24 2015, 23:42:28 UTC
You know, I keep saying that I can't decide between Porthos and Treville for my favourite character. But the truth is that Treville has the secondary character/not quite main character bonus, which means that I fear for his life every other episode while Porthos is presumably quite safe no matter what happens. So I'm usually getting more excited about Treville. (Well, and in addition to that, of course, his character combines about three zillion of my favourite character tropes. Captain Dad indeed!). I can't even exactly remember the episode by which he'd one me over. Likely as early as ep 2 (what him fake-chewing-out the musketeers after d'Artagnan got himself arrested XD). Great character, brilliantly acted (he pulls some of the best expressions on the show! And then there's the character stuff, like his anguish over his past mistakes in "The Good Soldier" *happy sigh*) I'm so glad we have him.

But I never noticed before that the facial scars had disappeared! D: (Obviously I'm a worse fangirl than I thought. DDD:) I actually ( ... )

Oh yes, so true. And I love his face palms or when he has his rare smiles or the scene where Aramis and Athos reveal that Aramis had slept with the queen. Just wonderful stuff.

I actually liked the scars! He's a veteran of a bazillion campaigns, so it made sense for them to be there.
Yep, same here. But I also appreciate the sexier look. *g*

I mean, seriously, I think the first and the last episode in series 2 are the only ones in which he doesn't leave his shirt unlaced, and sometimes even for no good reason other than to show off some skin? XD
It was episode 3 and 9 IIRC ;-) And I love that unlaced shirt. So. Much. XD

but so far Treville has shown more skin in one season that Athos in both!
I think I read somewhere that Tom doesn't want to get nekkid, because he hates to work out. Well, I don't think he gives himself enough credit...

He has the best smile! (His "proud father" smile is my favourite though. *g*)

You know, come to think of it you should have mentioned his sarcasm more explicitly in your post. ;) Oh, and his wonderfully vitriolic relationship with the cardinal! I loved those two together. Ugh, I miss that carnivorous French flamigo. They could have had so many more beaufiful episodes in which they were forced to work together.

I'm sure that with the new haircut + beard they could have pulled off a sexier look without having to get rid of the scars completely.

Has he ever gotten out of his clothes? I really don't remember... No, I was wrong. He slept with his old girlfriend and the widow.

Of course! It's pretty much the other reason I love 1x08 so much. Porthos ends up being such a (shirtless ;) ) gentleman. ♥

I think I read somewhere that Tom doesn't want to get nekkid, because he hates to work out.

Aw, poor guy!

It was episode 3 and 9 IIRC ;-) And I love that unlaced shirt. So. Much. XD

Clearly I have to start my rewatch soon!

Yes, that one is great. But I'd love to see a sultry smile next season :p ;)

You are right. Sarcasm has been added ^^

Clearly I have to start my rewatch soon! Well, I might watch a couple with you, if you want to *g*

This is fabulous, thank you! I've been wanting to see a comparison of his s1 v s2 look for ages. I loved him and fancied him in s1, but s2 just took that sexiness and ramped it up tenfold! His s2 look is utterly perfect, although I wouldn't have minded him keeping the scars.

The fact that we got to see him in action alongside the boys and showing lots of man cleavage made the horrid business of him losing his rank more than bearable, and as a device to get him into the action, it worked really well.

I so hope he gets a reasonable amount of screen time in s3, even though I doubt we'll be seeing his chest quite so often.

Thanks so much for this post. I'll be back to drool over him loads of times, I'm sure.

You are very welcome! The comparison HAD to be done.

My only wishes for season 3 are a lot of Treville, seing him in action, seing his chest a couple of times and Treville getting smoochies (I don't care if he is snogging a man or a woman, I just want someone GOOD for him. He deserves it)

Yep, smoochies would be good. And his chest. Lots of his chest. And sexy leather clothes. Plus keeping the s2 beard and hair.

Although I wouldn't mind if the LI eventually turned out to be a spy, but over the course of the series had actually fallen in love with him and now s/he's super conflicted, but won't let their country down and there's tons of drama with the spy eventually dying, because on the one hand we can't have anything nice, but on the other hand we can have melo-drama. And in the end Treville can move in with Richelieu in his secret hiding spot on to a nice person.

Alternatively the spy can survive and leave for a new life in the colonies, but that'd be too nice for the show.

Let me just quickly write that fic...

I forgot to comment on the bit you mentioned about why Marie de Medici threw him in prison. My head canon for that is that he supported Richelieu, thinking that although he didn't necessarily like him that much, at least he knows he can work with the man and that Richelieu has the good of France at heart, even though he can be a bastard. So Marie would have wanted Treville out of the way so he couldn't influence the king in the cardinal's favour.

That made sense to me, so I went with that explanation in fic.

Ooh, that's great, thanks! I like the idea that he could be a bit hot-headed! Thanks for these details. It's nice to start to build up a picture of him. It sounds like Dumas did him quite a favour with his depiction of him ( ... )

You've totally nailed it! I love this post and I'm bookmarking to reread over and over...

Treville is adorable. The stick beating woman of Pinon gif never fails to make me giggle.
