31. Dôra, Doralina by Rachel de Queiroz.
32. The Mercenaries by Donald E. Westlake. This is one of Westlake's earliest books--looks like it may be his second one published. Deeply hard-boiled, lean prose, and a nice use of the crook-as-detective device. Plus, a knockout ending that completely refutes the Mike Hammer ending I was worried the book was headed for.
