Devil In a Blue Dress by Walter Mosley.
52.
A Red Death by Walter Mosley. It's five years after the events of Devil In a Blue Dress, and Easy's a property owner now--so when the IRS comes after him, he's forced into working for the FBI investigating a possible communist connection in one of the community churches. At which point the bodies start piling up, and on top of everything else Easy is the prime suspect. Mosley gets somewhat political here, but it all rises from Easy's context and that of his community, so it never feels strident or forced.
