Rabbit-Proof Fence: The True Story of One of the Greatest Escapes of All Time by Doris Pilkington. I recently saw the film that was made of this, which was a great quest/adventure story with the virtue of being based on truth--three girls really did leave an assimilation school in Western Australia and walk 1500 miles home, eluding local and national authorities along the way. But in reading about the film afterward, I was struck by a comment from Molly Craig, the eldest and leader of the girls, who upon seeing the film reportedly said that it was "not my story." In reading the book--which is as much about the aboriginal situation in Western Australia as it is about the girls' journey--it became clear that there were more than a few dramatic liberties taken for the film. Which isn't to say that the book is disappointing in contrast, really, just different.
