79. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams (Re-read). I used to read this book and laugh my ass off. I mean that I would sit alone in a room and laugh out loud because I couldn't contain it. It makes me a little sad that I didn't laugh out loud that much re-reading it, but I guess considering how many times I've read it by now it's not surprising that I can see the jokes coming. I always used to like Marvin the best, which I guess tells you how depressed I was as a teenager. It struck me as I was reading this that, while Tolkien and C.S. Lewis were certainly British, I feel like this book was my introduction to the U.K. in many ways. Certainly it was in searching PBS for the BBC adaptation of the book that I first stumbled on Fawlty Towers and Monty Python and learned that people with fancy accents could be extremely silly indeed. Because it's there on the pages, here; I can't read any of the dialogue, or even much of the narration, without hearing it in a British accent. I can't decide if this is because I used to read it aloud in my terrible imitation of a British accent (certainly possible), or because of the aforementioned BBC series, or because Adams was actually that good that the very inflections come through on the page. The way I hear Arthur saying "Slartibartfast?!?" has to be from the series, I think; the rest is probably a combination of the three.
