so, someone suggested in a comment on a post that i look into SMART recovery, since i am interested in getting a therapist for my recovery and haven't found one yet. it's an alternitive to AA, a more psychiatry / psychology based program that uses CBT methods. it views alcoholism as less of a disease, and more of a maladaptive coping method - it ( Read more... )

YAY for finding meetings that you think will work with you! Don't let yourself chicken out. You only have to go once, you know. :)

I wish more people got that early childhood sexual experiences don't have to be traumatizing or victimizing. What's most important is the meaning we choose to give it and what works for us, not what the culture decides it should mean. I think that a lot of the anti-child abuse movement inadvertently does a lot more harm than good with how they color the perceptions that they believe people should have of experiences they've had. It makes me nuts.

yeah, i'll try really hard not to. i should at least go one time. who knows, i may love it.

and yes, exactly! i think that publicizing ONLY the really negative effects can make people who were involved, and didn't feel scared / hurt / etc., just feel guilty about the fact that they weren't horribly traumatized. i mean, don't get me wrong, i'm sure it screwed me up in some ways, but not in the ways typified by society. it reminds me of the movie mysterious skin; don't know if you've seen it but it's amazing. it shows how two boys were very differently affected by the same experience with being sexually abused at a young age. it's really interesting. it definitely doesn't affect everyone the same, and everyone doesn't have the same feelings and memories about their experience.

I have found that I had addictive behaviour way back, I was way too old before I gave up my pacifier.
I'd say try anything, some programmes work for some and not for others, and I believe it's important to find something you believe in.
I admire your determination.

yeah, i'm going to give it a shot and see how it goes. i'm sure i'll post about it here when the time comes. :)
