Save the sea kittens!

Here's an entry for glaucon's "Is it real or is it the Onion?" series:

PETA fishing for sympathy for 'sea kittens'

Info on overfishing is a good thing. But "sea kittens"? Srsly?!

I do appreciate attention being drawn to that issue. On the other hand, the way PETA goes about informing the public is generally such a huge turn-off that people tune out the information and dismiss it entirely, so I'm not sure they actually end up helping the cause overall.

not to repeat myself from Twitter too much, but I am now craving a filet-o-seakitten sandwich.

goodness... it's like the converse of land fish... we'll soon see children, adolescents and young adults unable to tell the difference between small mammals and fish.

And this is totally what makes this so assinine. Fish are like kittens because they're, what--furry and cuddly? Because they meow and purr? They're mammals and nurse their young? I mean, where on earth did PETA get the idea for this in the first place?

It sounds like their logic=

People don't eat kittens because they think they are cute. People eat fish because they think they are not cute. The name "fish" is clearly associated with non cuteness plus tastiness. Let us rename fish kittens and solve this problem!

Forgetting all of the cute things people enjoy eating like, say, lamb.

(and of course some people do eat cats, but I don't think PETA is thinking of them)

-j00j, who used their "make a sea kitten" toy to make a tuna named "sashimi."

Yeah. I see what they're saying, I just think it's completely cracked out, and more likely to be ridiculed than taken seriously by. . . well, anyone ever.

I'm working as an acupuncturist's assistant, actually, which is a better job for me, Chinese Medicine geek that I am. And yay, friendly stalking! (I'd have introduced myself, but I figured you'd know who I was once you saw I'd friended you.)
