I wasn't impressed with the trailers for Avatar, and then when I started reading reviews where pretty much the entire internet was calling it, "Dances with Smurfs" or, "Another Ferngully Remake" I couldn't figure out how it was getting so much good ink.

I guess it's just the hype.

Or that fact that most of the kids who are going to see it and getting all "zOMGthatwasthebestthingI'veeverseenintheuniverse!" weren't alive or were just wee babies when Dances with Wolves and/or Ferngully originally came out.

I've actually seen neither "Dances With Wolves" nor "Ferngully", actually, but I've definitely heard that it pulls strongly from both.

I LOVED it. I could have loved it more if I'd turned all the dialogue off. It was like a really awesome dream where the plot and talking doens't make much sense, but that's okay because omg we flew a pterodactyl (sp).

They should have made it a non-talkie. Just music would have been good.

I get that. The visual experience was, indeed, quite stunning.

Holy crap, I had no idea this was back on and would have been watching it on Hulu. Now the first several episodes are gone. Where can I watch them now?

I've downloaded mine from Vuze (which involves downloading a program, but it's been great for me).

Second season is amazing. First season never quite hit its stride, but second season will just keep blowing your mind.

I don't think it's a stretch at all. He wants his legs and cooperates with the evil guy, then he gets in with the natives and just goes with that. There's never any sense of wondering what he should do, or feeling conflicted about what his role is or where to go from there.

Dan Savage is not into monogamy so much, as I'm sure you've noticed. The salient point of his piece as far as I'm concerned is that "having sex means you're mated for life the end" bit. In a culture so close to nature, surely there's going to be some experimentation!

I think the vehemence of the negative news about "Avatar" is proportional to the amount of hype it's getting. If it weren't all over everything, people wouldn't care so much. I'm just baffled that so many people seem to think the movie itself it the best thing ever, beyond the visuals.
