Gardening in the 'fridge.

All the little plants that I ordered for the garden behind Lupine's barn arrived too early! So I'm trying to keep them alive until they can be planted out.

Asparagus roots and strawberry plants are in the crisper in the 'fridge. Blueberry bushes, rhubarb, and a few other assorted perennials are in the cellar. They're all crying, Plant me! Oh ( Read more... )

Actually, they are screaming "Please save us from the deer, rabbits, birds, and groundhogs! They're gonna eat us!" *laughs* Besides, you know how the northeast is, you can never plant anything in March, we even get snow storms in April sometimes!

That, too. So vulnerable they are! I'll be protecting them with a fence, though.... which still isn't up. So temporary chicken wire will have to do to start off with.

Yeah, I don't know why they sent them so early. Said they'd be shipped for, "appropriate planting time for your area." Came from a state with similar temperature to PA, so figured would be okay.

*nods* I'm sure they are, dogie. The idea behind that is to try to keep them in a dormant state--basically tricking them into thinking it's still winter and too cold to start growing. Temp in the 'fridge is low, but not freezing. Freezing would be bad.

We're getting cold, and you're getting wet! Send me a blanket, I'll send you an umbrella! :P

I was watching this show on TV where they package and sell trees as wedding gifts and they freeze the trees. Apparently the company also put them in a certain plastics that you can create a mini greenhouse like effect and their trees can live quite awhile without water too.

That said mabye you can create a mini terarrium in which to store the plants while waiting for the weather to be a bit more pleasant

Interesting. :) I had thought about temporarily planting the strawberries and blueberries in pots, but I've been working really hard in getting the beds prepared and am hoping to be able to plant them within the next couple of days. *Hugs*

I don't even think bears would like the "greens" of these plants--mostly all stems and roots. :P
