[ Her garden hadn't grown in yet, so Ray had to settle with buying fresh groceries weekly for her new restaurant. She didn't mind too much, as it was nice to spend a few hours away from the restaurant once in a while. ]

[ Today, she decided to walk rather than take the public transportation. It was nice out, and if she cut through the park, she'd get some nice scenery too. Plus, transportation that wasn't flying always felt weird and cramped. ]

[ She was hugging a large bag of groceries -- mostly fresh vegetables and a few bottles of alcohol -- when she spotted a man sitting atop a toy tiger. The image was... unexpected. He reminded her a little of Charles. ]

[ And she couldn't help but stop and stare for a moment. ]

[He doesn't take notice of the woman standing off to the side, bags in her hands and a look of question on her face, until he nearly tumbles off the tiger due to one overshot swing of his leg. He catches himself, though, just in time and after a moment of absently resetting the hat on his head, he waves awkwardly in her direction.

How embarrassing. He's laughing though, like it doesn't bother him much at all.]

[ She can't help but laugh along as well. It's nice to see a grown man who's still got a little bit of a child in him. ]

[ She approaches, and then says teasingly: ] I think those were made for someone slightly smaller in size.

Are they? I never really thought of that.

[He rubs sheepishly at the back of his head. He doesn't just have a little bit of a child in him, he's just down right childish.]

I used to play on these with my daughter back home.

Ah, you have a daughter?

[ She'd be very interested in hearing about your daughter. Mostly because she wishes she had one of her own... ]

I do! She's ten years old now.

[He's pretty enthusiastic, since he loves talking about his daughter. He's never really had anyone to talk to her about, though, so he speaks this time around with added pride. He's not boasting, like he normally does, his tone still sincere.

He lifts his bracelet, which was once a communicator, and opens several holographic images of his little girl. Brown hair, colourful clothing, eyes like her father's, but... a frown in every single one. They're not on the best terms, despite how much he wishes they were.]

She doesn't like posing for pictures... [A nervous little chuckle, but he continues to flip through them regardless, more than once per photo.]

[ Ray has to laugh at the facial expression. ]

She will thank you for it when she's older and wants something to look back on her childhood.

[ Said a little wistfully, because... it isn't fair that she can't have one. ]

Maybe. I'll make her smile one day.

[He closes off the images with a little sigh, like he's not quite finished looking at them. They'll always be there, he reminds himself, he can look at them whatever. He's grateful that he has photos, even if they only frown at him.

He can tell that her tone isn't all that cheery, and since he has no brain to mouth filter, he asks a little curiously:]

Do you have any children, miss?

[ The question catches her off-guard, but Ray musters a smile and shakes her head ]

No. I can't bear children. I wish I did, though. They're delightful, aren't they?

[That answer catches him off-guard, and he's quick to stand from his seat and hold his hands out awkwardly before him in apology.]

Ah. I'm... sorry? Umm. For bringing it up, that is.

[He rubs a little at his arm, head downcast as his foot continuously switches between kicking and burying in the sand. He doesn't know what to say, but the fact that he's genuinely upset to hear that is clear as day.

He opens his mouth to add to his apology but is soon to close it. He wills his brain to produce words, but all he can manage to do is suck in a deep, awkward breath.]

[ She hadn't meant to make you upset. Ray hurriedly waves her hand in the air, as if it's no big deal ]

Don't worry about it, you wouldn't have known.

[Even so, he removes his hat and holds it humbly over his chest with a hand and clears his throat.]

Still... I'm really sorry to hear that. It's not fair...

[ For a moment, her temper flares up a little, and her anger and hurt shows plainly on her face. It really wasn't fair... She'd have made a wonderful mother. ]

[ But she tells herself to relax. No point taking anger out on this stranger. It wasn't his fault. ]

[ A smile, and then a slightly teasing tone: ] Sometimes children come into my restaurant, and I get to play mother for a little while. So in a way, I get to have many children without the hassle of having to stress over them.

[He does flinch a little at the hurt and angry expression, since he's quite used to getting looked at in that way by pretty much everyone. But as she relaxes, he, too does as well. The expression isn't forgotten though, he'll make up for bringing it out somehow.

He still keeps his hat held to his chest in respect.]

You own a restaurant? If my daughter ever shows up here, I'll be sure to bring her over.

[He replaces the hat on his head, but he keeps the hand there to scratch sheepishly at the back.]

I'm sure she'd love you! [A pause, and he laughs a forced laugh.] You'd probably remind her a lot of her mother, then.

Feel free to stop by, yourself, some time. [ You're kind of like a child anyways ] It's a cottage in the village with a large sign that says "Beams" hanging over it.

[ Her smile falters a little at the last statement. She's not really sure how to go about asking about the mother, because it sounds as if that might be a touchy subject. So, Ray just settles with a inquisitive look. ]
