It had been about half an hour since the group who had volunteered (and not volunteered) to join the dreamscape first arrived into the setting Sylvani provided. Though they could not see her, they could at least hear her voice. She had explained to them that this was one of the major battles between the more powerful dreamwalkers and the invading nightmare army. They could see the damage: the fighting, the yelling, the injured, the dying-the noctaere. Yet they were completely safe. Things would just pass through them as if they were ghosts.
"All this," Sylvani's voice echoed around them, "was brought about one who succumbed to the dark powers of the nightmare energy. Nightmares had always existed in this world, but she-"
"Oh, that's not nice, Sylvani." A new voice suddenly echoed around them, a strange darkness gathering before them to slowly form a tall, pale woman dressed in black. "Talking about me behind my back again? Didn't your mother ever teach you any manners?"
"You!? How did you-"
"Tsk, tsk, is that really how you greet an old friend? But come now. They're all so confused!" She turned to face the group, a playful smile on her lips. "Oh, I see. It's because they don't know, do they? Please, allow me to introduce myself. I am Nitiri. You could say I am the bad, bad person who decided to become the 'ruler' of nightmares."
She then disappeared, only to reappear at random next to one person and then another-flitting in an out like a ghost. But no matter where she was, her voice echoed as if she were standing next to them.
"Are you not bored?" She laughed. "Sylvani, your presentations were always lacking. Maybe we should spice things up a bit, hm?" There was a chill to her voice. "And I know just the way."
"No, wait! You can't-" Sylvani's voice crackled and started to fade.
"Oh but I can and will. How about it, my lovelies? Care for a bit of fun? Or at least, it will be fun for me."
Instantly the group would feel something...change. They could now physically feel the air and their surroundings. Their movements disturbed any loose articles on the ground, and even the people they had been watching could see them now. Should they look, the NPCs that had accompanied them were also nowhere to be found. The ones who had reassured them that everything would be safe and would be there in the case something did happen had disappeared altogether.
The group left behind were left to defend for themselves. No longer were they just passive tourists just watching behind a glass window. Now they were a part of the fighting. And the noctaere were making their way toward them, eager for a chance at fresh prey.
