Sometimes I fancy myself a cool kid now, having fit in with this barn niche of mine, but really, I'm so far below the cool barn kids that it's sobering. I can't afford my own horse, I'm about 60 pounds overweight, I'm too short to look elegant when riding. But I'm friends with the instructor, I teach some lessons, and I can lay the smackdown. So I guess it evens out. ;)
Ooooo..... And that's the weird thing about your craving for popularity. You're aware that the popular kids are idiots, that they only know how to talk about two or three different things. But they have an allure that defies reason. ain't that the truth!!!
And besides, you love the band nerds. yup, band nerds rock! And make the best lovers. *snerk* But that is experience talking..Hubbikins was a baritone player.
It's about the recognition. It's the idea that someone - not just anyone, but someone with INFLUENCE - would see the REAL you. And who doesn't want recognition? Isn't that what makes the world go round?
and the very act of hoping keeps you firmly in the "outsider" category, not just with the popular kids but with your friends, too, And I thought that was just me...part of the group yet not part. *sigh*
Ah, maturity. I've decided that maturity is overrated. I have more fun acting immature than when I act mature.
Well, you are different, but that difference manifests itself in being unable to eat half a
( ... )
Why do we do this to ourselves? There are much better things to get our panties in a wad over, but what do we obsess over? Popularity...recognition...and it ultimately is worthless.
Yes. It's tough to know that it's worthless and still feel the need for it, isn't it?
Thanks for your responses... priceless! (I think you should write a book entitled, The Fart of Marriage!)
Thanks, symbologie. I'm not sure about published personal essays. I'd love to publish something - to finish something, really - someday. We'll see.
As for 16 and 30 and 41, this morning I'm happy to be older. And tomorrow, when I go to school and my students have their midterm exams, I'll definitely be glad to be older! ;-D (When I have to grade, though, maybe I'll change my mind again!)
Aw, shucks! :-D Seriously, thanks, RVC. You're always such a supportive and positive influence around here!
As for the 16-year-old body ... yes, I know what you mean! I didn't have the greatest body even then, but damn, my metabolism ... can I please have it back? ;-D
Yeah, we do keep playing these games in our own heads, don't we? *hugs*
OT: Thanks for leaving the note about Jane Austen. I don't watch TV, and completely missed the advertising blitz, but I'll turn on the tube for something like this!
Re: Jane Austen... I have to admit I was a bit disappointed by this version of Persuasion. Have you seen the 1995 (?) version with Amanda Root and Cirian Hinds (sp?). If not, see that one instead. I'm still looking forward to the other adaptations. I saw part of Northanger Abbey on YouTube a while back. It was fun!

At school (as a teacher), I feel much as you do at the barn. But I'm glad you're doing something you love. That makes it so much better, I think.
Hope all else is going well with you!

Being 30, or, er, 41, is much better than 16. Though I would give anything to have my 16-yer-old thighs and butt at the moment, but not the mind.
