I was born in Brooklyn, and spent all of 6 months of my life living there. But it's in the blood and never dies. My whole family is from NYC. I read your post with a sigh of nostalgia. Attitude, baby.

I had a sigh of nostalgia too. Born in North Jersey, grew up there. Dad and Grandpa worked in Manhattan. I have SCA friends who *live* in Manhattan, and we talk about what it's like to live in and near NYC. When I go back there I almost instantly revert to the accent and the attitude -- not that the attitude ever completely left me. (Though there is much more to the attitude than is told here. Perhaps I can talk about it more later. The Spider-Man comic books give a really good overview of the NYC mindset if you read enough of them.)

Totally off the subject of your post, but I was wondering what year y'all graduated from S&M? The reason I ask is that I have a new co-worker (class of 2000) - I'd have if she knew you guys, but I don't know your real names!!! My brother was class of "97, way after me, which made me feel REALLY old! :-0

We are Class of '99, so yeah, she's one of our Juniors. I'm Nick Soucy, and Guenievre was then Jennifer Rehmann. I was on 4th East, she was on 2nd Beall. Ask her if she remembers NickAndJennifer in one word, and yeah.

Its interesting, because when I was in New Orleans, I saw a fairly large number of cops too. If anything it made me feel less safe, because they always seemed to be in a hurry to get someplace else, which didn't speak well of the condition of the city.

Did they do bag searches when you went into the Met? The closest comparison I have to London in terms of its dynamic is London, and I don't think NYC has anything on London security (Orwell was British after all). CCTV in front of every building and in every subway, the museums did searches, and probably most disturbingly, there were no public trash bins or mailboxes. Apparently the IRA put bombs in them. All this for a culture that really doesn't even have guns.

They glanced in bags but in a very desultory manner (and that was only the Met, and maybe the MoMA, not the Cloisters or the Morgan. Plenty of public trashcans, at least.

I wonder if something was up. I don't remember seeing that many cops around when I was there last year, but then, maybe I tuned them out as I was used to them?

Love to hear more about your trip!

As frightening as it may sound, your post made me nostalgic for home. Days and memories of riding the subway to and from work, down to the village to hang out have just come flooding back ( ... )
