Resonation is a connection between two soul wavelengths. Without at least two compatible wavelengths, resonation is impossible.

A soul's wavelength is, put simply, the sound of your soul. It's the energy your soul moves with, and the energy that feeds your soul. Soul wavelengths can show parts of your personality, but it's not a given that your wavelength is who you are.

[Have a raised hand right away.]

Energy that "feeds" the soul?

In very basic terms? What drives you.

Ah. [He returns his attention back to his notes which are - blank so far. Feeding the soul sounded a lot like the concept of 'Fear' that he is familiar with, but since it's apparently not the same...

Not that him having any kind of Fear would have made sense to begin with. He isn't a youkai or some other kind of monster. This seems to have more to do with mediating.]

In order to have a successful resonation, you must have two things: willing wavelengths, and similar wavelengths. Two wildly different souls will probably not be able to resonate, or they will have very weak reasonation or very strong and unstable resonation, which can lead to a violent soul rejection.

"Soul Rejection" is the violent falling-apart of two souls, usually trying to resonate or combine themselves somehow. If you try to resonate with someone and your soul violently rejects them or your resonation falls apart, it's usually a sign you're not going to be very good partners. Never force yourself to resonate. It could make you violently ill if the wavelength is far enough away from your own.

[Well, damn, that sounded just like what had happened with him and Noa that time they had tried resonating. But Zed refused to believe that, how could they not be good partners?]

How ill is 'ill'?

It depends on how badly the resonation goes, or how strong the other soul is. It can be anywhere from headache, to nausea, to violently physically ill, to losing consciousness for some time. I've never seen a resonation make anyone deathly ill, but it can get nasty.

Once you've found someone with a wavelength similar to or compatible with yours, you should try resonating.

First, both Weapon and Meister must shift their wavelengths to their partner's. If you've never done this before, it's going to be difficult. Make sure both of you are as calm as possible. If either soul is panicked, resonation will be very difficult, and will be more likely to fall apart. Both body and mind should be somewhat relaxed.

If you've never resonated before, you should try doing this outside of a fight setting. Otherwise, you're more likely to get yourselves killed.

The idea of resonation is to create a sharing of power. The Meister takes their wavelength and sends it to the Weapon. The Weapon takes it, amplifies it with their own, and sends it back. This continues until both souls are unified and strong, and the Meister can use the power through the Weapon, usually to achieve superskills or the Meister's ability.

Meisters, when you try to connect your soul for the first time, it's better to let the Weapon guide you. They can feel your soul through you and will need to draw on the power of it in order to connect theirs to yours.

Weapons, the first step is to ensure your partner is willing and ready to resonate. Once you have that, and you've opened the connection to each other, feel free to take on the power within them of your own accord. Sometimes, Meisters need the extra help, especially if they're not Soul Perceptive, have never resonated before or are currently fighting the enemy.

Resonation doesn't need to be achieved in a standstill pose, but most early pairs find it much easier.

[Gai raises his hand.]

And it is in the sending back and forth that the Weapon takes the injuries for the Meister?

It depends on the Weapon, honestly. Sometimes that's their ability. Sometimes instead of taking it, they heal it. Honestly, the Weapon has to be willing to take it for the Meister.

Spirit's never taken damage for me, but he has made it easier to keep fighting with serious wounds.

If the Weapon is willing and cannot heal, though, they can focus on taking? I ask as the weapon, not the Meister.

[That seems an important point to clarify.]

And how does Spirit do that for you?

Resonation can take a lot out of you, especially the first few times you try it. Be prepared to ache or be overwhelmed; if you try resonating with a soul stronger than your own, it's likely you could pass out. Try to stick to a power level close to yours until you've trained for a while.

Superskills should not be attempted until you and your partner are comfortable in fighting and resonating simultaneously, and have at least five or six souls to your names. Superskills include but are not limited to things like Witch Hunter, which is a Scythemeister skill.

[And more questions!]

What sort of superskills have been recorded for ranged fighters?

oh snap you stumped me screw_disorder December 1 2011, 09:29:21 UTC
Ranged weapons are rarer and difficult to use. They've got a series of superskills, as do any Weapon set, but generally ranged Weapons tend not to use their superskills in battle.

I'd ask Azusa. I don't usually use ranged weapons.

There should be a few books in the Library on them. I'll find them for you and send them along.
