Outdated?

Just listening to the radio and a woman announced that "the male breadwinner and stay-at-home wife no longer exist" because everyone has to work their arses off so that they can have a huge mortgage and all the latest gadgets. It's been lovely knowing you all, but sadly it appears that Ed and I no longer exist... ;-p

I really envy your position! Obviously all this preparation for marriage has me looking at the next step (i.e. mortgage and sproglings) and I can't see any way that either J or I will be able to afford to not work, which is kind of tough given that I *want* to be a stay-at-home mum!

It's a real sod. If you both work then childcare is exhorbitant (we calc. one of you have to be on 24k per year just to afford the 19k full time childcare for 2 kids -unless you only want 1 of course!) *OR* you have to be able to manage on 1 wage.

Tis poor :(

At the moment we can manage one just one wage luckily. We were fortunate that we bought our house before the prices went insane and we're not that bothered about luxuries. I still have the option of going back to work in October if I want to, as I took unpaid leave rather than resigning.

We worked out roughly how much extra we would have after paying childcare if I went back to work and it's not enough to warrant changing our minds on having a parent at home all the time.

Sod that, Sarah and I have long discussed it being me as the stay-at-home hubbie and her the bread winner :) Although I think she'd be almost as happy as me staying at home.

Then again, we've both been the stay-at-home one for many months here and there so it works both ways.

Was this RadioGuardian you were lsitening to?

Radio4. Ed and I agreed many moons ago that whoever was earning the least got to be the stay-at-home parent - hurrah for Civil Service pay being crap!!

Ed would love to be a stay at home Dad...I feel a bit guilty sometimes that he works so that I can stay at home and play with...erm...look after Evie. Not my fault he earns more than twice what I did though...
