I recently read a few amusing short stories by Junichiro Tanizaki. The observations are clever and the translation from Japanese to English by Paul McCarthy seems more than adequate, in the way that the writing remains very conversational and 'Japanese'. The product review calls Tanizaki's book 'comic realism', not without good reason!
on tuesday i watched werner herzog's 2007 documentary 'encounters at the end of the world' in the cinema, it was terrific to see the vibrant colours of nature on big screen and hear the electronic sounds of seals. life in antarctica seems to have a strangely comforting quality, out of this world. on the way home we were discussing various things in

1. after last summer's mishap on the road, i started cycling into work last tuesday. although still inexperienced and slightly wobbly, i feel more confident and am in better control of my bike. time-wise i'm doing better than last year, and definitely have more strength in my legs to cycle uphill (still have to stop and push the bike at some point
