Charities 2022

Feb 07, 2022 07:58

My monthly automatic donation list is up to six charities now. Auto-donate is the way to go. I love the Bible's 10% goal, but the idea of giving intentionally and thoughtfully as soon as you're paid just doesn't work for me. set it and forget it.

That said, I am not AT the 10% goal, nor will I be this year, but that's okay I can increase a little ( Read more... )

We do UMCOR too, and I prefer them to Catholic Charities or Red Cross by a lot.

We do auto pay too. Local Food Bank, Public Radio, Sierra Club, and then when disasters hit, we give separately to those. And the local Rescue Mission for homeless. 10% is a good goal I think. Although with inflation - should it go up like tips have? Just thinking out loud...

Well, lots of people are asking about raises this year, and I'm reminding them in finance groups that your raise is based on what your company made *last year*, not what bread price headlines are *this week*.

I'm not even quite to 10% but I'm gradually trying to get there. Sierra club sounds like a good one, I might have to look into them.

Knowing this may not be popular:

The Biblical 10% is a tithe; the ancient Hebrew considered, and many Biblically-minded or -taught individuals still do consider, 10 to be the number of increase.
Because God ordained this ten percent* or tithe, to be returned to Him, that first ten percent should be given to Him, is due Him ( ... )

I only barely believe in God so you can say pretty much anything, I'll take it with the same shrug I do for all religion.

But I would also say that there's no way to give money directly TO GOD - I do not know God's venmo. So I'm going to use my best judgement to make a call on what God would want me to do with that 10%, and it's feeding hungry people. If some human comes to me to remodel a church building and they claim that they're representing God, I'm going to have to disagree, I think humans are way too biased on that topic.

Yes! There is one of those (run in a church) in our area. We do not donate there and instead direct our support to one that focuses on everyone- single people, people experiencing disabilities, hospice/homecare patients, as well as families and other configurations. This is so important. Single people and couples without kids experience hunger too and its ridiculous how we attach these hoops to aid.
