This Saturday I noticed a small brown dove sitting in one of the hanging plants in the backyard.

Oh, wow. I ... you know, looking it up on Google Maps I don't have any clear memories of our being there. I think I'm starting to form impressions, though. (I also messed up trying to place it by zooming in, and then moving east, which took me along the long, long, long trail to Vermont rather than back to my old apartments.

No, wait, I'm getting a better impression of the place now, and I think we may have went a couple of times. Nothing near like how often we'd gone to the Chinese buffet place. I believe I'd gone there with my father too, and maybe even rcoony some. Still, wow.

I think we went there less often thqn that other diner closer to that mall... I think it was named after a number, with the funky mirrored interior? but we definitely hit this one at least a couple times. I'm pretty sure you favored the "two-cheeseburger platter". (I also think this is the place where a piece of cheesecake I got there had been on the shelf a little too long.)

I hadn't thought to scroll around Google Maps yet... You lived in the "Colonie Apartments" near the Popeye's, didn't you? Let's see, street view... yeah, pretty sure that's it.

I wonder if it'll be another dozen years before I wear that coat again. ;^b Of course, I hope it'll be less then another... nine years?, before I manage to run into you, too. Sigh.

Oh, looks like you have a mourning dove nesting in your hanging planter! When we had one just off the back door, we had a dove nest there; you could see the scraggly little hatchlings sometimes peeking out from under their mother through the sliding glass door.

It's actually pretty cool getting to see birds nesting up so close, and I've always been fond of morning doves. Thankfully, their babies are nice and quiet (unlike towhees).

I was *pretty* sure it was a mourning dove, but with birds I'm never positive. Show me a mammal and unless it's a bat, rodent, or obscure monkey I can probably tell you the species. Birds I often hesitate to nail it down any narrower then genus. ;^)

Back in Washington one year we had a magpie nest in the eaves where a vent cover fell off. That was sort of a nightmare. We didn't have the heart to evict it before the babies were grown, but they were *loud*, both the babies and the parents. And they left an incredible mess behind. The dove of course gives a completely different vibe... and that's a good thing.

Every year we've been in this house we've had a nest of finches behind an old-fashioned dial thermometer on the other side of the porch, so I suppose there's nothing that *new* about having birds out there. The novelty here is how clearly you can see her. (What goes on in the finch nest stays in the finch nest, other then the angry peeping.) I'm tempted to set up a DoveCam.

And OT, but I just stumbled across the Cribbage Room on Spindizzy. I'm amused :)
