Rules of the meme:

1. Anonymously post a pairing and prompt you would like to see written. Since this is a kink meme, there is supposted to be a kink involved, but normal well-written prompts should work just as well.

Boxing Days (Tiananmen Square AU), part 1/? anonymous September 14 2009, 06:00:50 UTC

For the anon(s) that requested revolutionary!Rorschach back in the second KM. I'm still working on it, but thought I'd release the first bit for now. Had to Sinify their names... it won't be too hard to figure out who is who.

Warnings: historical inaccuracy, really strange subject matter (but this is the KM, so maybe it's not one of the weirder ones??), probably lots of political incorrectness. Be willing to suspend your disbelief more than usual... I still can't believe I wrote this.

The next week Red is there again, and Deng finds himself rubbing his hands together for a beat too long, chalk already swift on his palms, gratuitous now. Red doesn't meet his eyes, though, and stays at the opposite end of the gymnasium, as if he can tell that Deng is unapologetically middle-class. Deng finds himself throwing punches harder than ever that day, bloodying a nose or two and making too much noise when he returns to his dorm room that evening, sinking into his bunk bed a little too loudly and earning him the sullen grumblings of his roommates. The room, his bed, feel too small for him. Deng pushes his feet out past the edge of the mattress for the first time instead of curling around himself like he usually does, and as he drifts off in an angry sleep, his toes clench and unclench in the air ( ... )

Thank you so much! I'm glad there's at least one person out there who likes this :D The plot bunny got into my head, and I've been taking Chinese classes and watching lots of Chinese movies... and there you go.

WOW. I am incredibly impressed. The mood and style are just stunning, as is the growing romance. Loving the characterization. And yay tiny canon references! I think the dream was my favorite part. I will be very, very much looking forward to more updates of this.

Thank you!! <3 <3 I'm a sucker for slow-moving romances, and figured I'd try my hand at a Dan/Ror piece while playing in a *completely* different universe. >< Sometimes I feel like this is more of a *homage* to Watchmen...

With Red beside him, Deng finds that things have changed. He knows that he was always tall, but now the crook is gone from his posture and his voice soars louder than before. Soon he's leading the chant, turns of phrases and classical idioms coming to him easily, his love of the classics entering his sentences as poetry. Rhetoric is natural and he finds himself responding to the crowd as much as they do to him-- and really, he's not leading anything, just channeling everybody else's high spirits. Red glowers beside him, hand gripping a signpost he'd fashioned out of bamboo rods from construction sites and cardboard and tape. The Time Is Now, his post says, and he grips it tightly in his hands, knuckles white against the creak of the wood ( ... )

Afternoon approaches and with it, the marrow-gold swelter of the summer sun. Red, Deng and some of Deng's classmates make their way to the Tiantan and perch in the northernmost spot of the Temple of Heaven, leaning on the rough and rusting railing. There's a slight breeze up here and even Red is not impervious to the small comforts, tilting his head in the direction of the wind, the downturned edges of his mouth lifting slightly ( ... )

This fic is just blowing me away. It feels so accurate and yet it parallels the source material so well (even working in Rorschach's love of Coke!) that I can't help but be amazed.

Also, have you seen or did you draw) the devArt pic of these two? Because it's beautiful as well and fan art of prompts should definitely be encouraged.

Will have to link to the fanart at some point! And thank you for saying all those nice things. :D I love Wanglaoji myself, so had to work it in there somehow.

man, this fic ROCKS. It's an exciting revolutionary story, even apart from the loveliness of a carefully written, slow-moving Dan/Ror romance. And, it looks very ambitious to me, at least at this point. I hope it ends up being another of the kinkmeme's great AU epics.

I hope it ends up being another of the kinkmeme's great AU epics. No pressure, right? :O

I am thrilled, though, that you like this so far! I figured the spirit of revolution is universal enough that readers would be able to take the plunge without knowing too much about all the politics going on in post-Mao China. What I'm trying to go for is less of a sprawling AU (nothing drastic will change Ror during this time/in this place-- he's quite in his element, here) and more of a What Could Have Happened If sort of thing. Right now the ending-as-I-have-imagined-it is a bit on the grim side, but AUofAU-spinoff-plot bunnies are already hopping around in my head.

Oh WOW, this is wonderful! I love the sensory detail, the slowly building relationship, and the characterization. Rorschach fits his role so well (or is it the other way around?). I like how you mention bits of politics to keep it realistic and interesting even to people who don't know a thing about Chinese politics.

Oh, and infinite love for the little mentions from canon - Ror's love of carbonated beverages, the sign...
