It's strange to be almost sane again, and it's even stranger to be drunk. He hums, kicking his feet as Will carries him back to their room. They're much closer to the Emperor than anyone is usually allowed to be, but he doesn't seem to mind them. Really, he doesn't seem to mind much of anything. He looks right through them in a friendly kind of way, and every now and again, when he reckons Byron can stand it, he puts two blue fingers on each temple and sends a jolt through his poor shattered head. It hurts a little, when parts fuse together, but he always feels better in the end ( ... )

Was it ever revealed what the whole deal with the usurper of Dan's kingdom was? I had a mind that it was Moloch, but I don't recall him ever being identified.

If it is Moloch (or some generic sorcerer type), perhaps the reason Hollis was able to so easily reverse the coup is because it ISN'T Hollis; Hollis was captured early on in the story, and Moloch himself took his place once his spies figured got word that Dan was making a triumphant return.

Unfortunately, Dan was also trailing the Emperor's entourage, so finishing him off just then might not have been the best plan of action. And now he's just biding his time, waiting for the perfect opportunity to murder the prince and secure his ascent to the throne...

Damn, I'd use that if I wasn't such a happy!junkie and hadn't already written Byron and Hollis catching up on old times. ...Come to think of it, Molloch wouldn't know that stuff and Hollis wouldn't tell him shit. You know Hollis. Of course, what else is magic for? Then again, Byron's torturers had access to magic, and there are still things he refused to give up. Hn...

Not full replacement, then-- maybe Hollis' attempt to regain the throne was successful, but before he was captured Moloch was able to put a spell on Hollis that would turn him into a sleeper agent, Manchurian Candidate style. Hollis launches an assassination attempt against Dan, which is averted-- but not before he's poisoned/spelled/some other thing that can only be undone by locating a special counter ingredient/spell, or locating Moloch himself. Cue adventure time!

Oh, and also, Dan's father is holding Hollis in prison pending execution for the whole assassination attempt thing. Unless Dan & Co. can find Moloch and prove Hollis' innocence, he's going to take a little ride in a nail-studded barrel. But we know that Dan & Co. can do it, because they have the awesome powers of being the OT3 on their side. :D

Change that "before he was captured" in the first line to "before he escaped", otherwise what I just said makes no sense. This is why proofreading is important, kids.

I just don't know what to do with them yet. I don't think I'll pussy out and ret-con, though. Honestly, if anyone in the band needs some kind of creative mentoring, I think Nelly will tell Adrian to tell them to see Byron about it. Or something. XD

She goes light on the entourage, knowing that Laurie of all people wouldn't have all the right gifts or enough gentlemen to escort her ladies-in-waiting and enough bedrooms aired if she'd been in possession of the place for six months, let alone the sixteen days or so that it has actually been. She just takes her own maid and two guards, and wears a riding habit that can be torn off scandalously short at a moments notice in case she has to do any fighting herself. It's been years, but thanks to a nearly-successful assassination attempt last winter, she knows she's still got it ( ... )
