I would be more squicked if I wasn't distracted by the widdle-bitty kitties and Bubastis and the mommy sniffing each other.

He's busy enough for a while that he doesn't find another boyfriend until the weather has turned and the trees have dropped their petals and are unfurling bright green leaves. Business is booming, and he's hearing unpleasant rumours about the Pentagon and viral bioengineering; he spends a long time on the phone with Silk Spectre, exchanging ideas, making plans ( ... )

When his girl starts acting moody again he calls his secretary and says he won't be in for a week. He can afford it. Veidt was very busy last fall while Ozymandias was resting, and he's slipped from 'quite well-to-do' to downright 'filthy rich', even after pouring so much back into R & D and giving his employees their metaphorical weight in benefits.

He should take more time off, anyway. He doesn't sleep enough, and with Bubastis there he can sometimes sleep without bad dreams.

For a week, Ozymandias works nights while Adrian spends his days with Bubastis. He feels quietly guilty. As if he's taking advantage of her. She's his daughter, or close enough, and she trusts him utterly, depends on him for everything, adores him without any idea - He pushes the thoughts aside. Guilt, he tells himself, is a foolish self-indulgence. He must learn not to feel it. He will need it, eventually, the ability to set aside guilt and keep moving. Bubastis is happy. Bubastis is elated. That's all that matters. He gets nothng sexual from it, but ( ... )

He's not so dreadfully busy, but somehow Veidt finds himself without any inclination to find a boy to take home. He spends his odd free evenings at home with Bubastis instead, sprawled on the sofa reaquainting himself with old favorite authors and reading the best bits aloud while she listens, long ears twitching, eyes bright ( ... )

Well, anon. I'm not going to be able to bear to read the part where he kills her, so I'm counting this fic as a complete success. T__T

As fantastic as this is, I can't help but hold my breath for the time Bubastis actually RECIPROCATES.

...I am a sick, sick little moo-cow.

He no longer takes boys home, but he doesn't miss it. They were amusing, on the whole. He no longer has the time or patience for amusement. And he needs no company, save Bubastis ( ... )

She always likes going to Antarctica. It suits her. She stalks the halls of Karnak with implacable grace, like a spirit, like a goddess. The guardian spirit of the reactor. Nobody teases her about the penguins anymore, although she accepted those comments, like everything else, with gentle disdain and no sign of anger. Some of the researchers will scratch her behind the ears, or pet her shoulders, while they talk to Veidt. She allows the touches, head inclined and ears bent forward in acceptance.

"I wish she was here all the time," one of the researchers confesses. "She makes the place so much more alive."

The idea creeps over Adrian's mind that night with sickening invitability. But it will be better for Bubastis, he thinks. She's happy here. she fits. The researchers like having her there, like spending time with her. She has all the space she could want. He strokes her flank, and she looks at him through narrowed eyes. Then she closes them and lets her ears relax. There couldn't be a more obvious signal for Let it go and sleep ( ... )

Anon, you astonish me. This is probably the most in-character I've ever seen Adrian written, and he's finger-fucking his goddamn mutant cat. The part about how he couldn't have a boyfriend because he'd probably die in Adrian's plot really got me... all his justifications are what really makes this fic great. And now the fact that he kills her in the intrinsic field makes me SO FUCKING SAD. DDD:

Having Bubastis around for only four months of each year does no wonders for his mood, but it helps focus him. Veidt had not realized how dependant he had become on her presence, her earnest love ( ... )

There are others. Not many. He has to be reasonably discreet, and he never manages to quite shake the feeling that Bubastis wouldn't approve. He never goes home with a boy while she's in New York, or brings one home; their time together is far too precious to interrupt with other romances ( ... )
