DISCUSSION

Can we have something similar to the "updates" thread in the KM where OPs post their discussion prompts here? It'd be a nice way of keeping track of everything going on on each page.

What do anons think of constructive criticism on the (or any, really) meme?

Is it just me, or is Watchmen preternaturally well-suited to rule 63?

What goes on in the kinkmeme... anonymous February 27 2010, 19:11:19 UTC
What do people think should go into the kinkmeme, what are their preferences? Have there been times when an author/prompter has crossed the line for you?

Twilight Lady anonymous February 27 2010, 20:30:12 UTC
What's your characterisation of the Twilight Lady? Fanon seems to make her into a happy go lucky, free lovin', free spirited type-- a 60s sex symbol laced up with leather instead of hippie gear.

Dan calls her a "sick" lady-- it could have just been a reaction to Laurie's presence and all the other stuff that was happening in-canon, but what's the basis for that accusation/characterisation? I like to think she's a little deeper than fanon gives her credit for, but she's always written as a tool/foil for Dan's kink-discovery instead of a character in her own right.

Thoughts?

She was obviously a meaningful figure in Dan's life, and shouldn't be dismissed as easily as Dan himself does, when trying to look cool to Laurie ( ... )

Yeah, while I do think the fanon version of her can be fun to read, this is my main problem with it. I find it difficult to believe that she really just wants to tie Dan/Rorschach up and help them overcome their sexual hangups out of the goodness of her kinky little heart; realistically, she has to be a bit more pragmatic and hardheaded than that, and it'd be nice to see more of that in fic.

but that would be SO COOL anonymous February 27 2010, 20:35:13 UTC
Sometimes I'll think something up that I am tempted to prompt with, but then it doesn't seem quite worthy of the KM--despite being interesting (to me), I get the feeling nobody will pick it up, and I probably wouldn't do it justice if I tried, and/or it's not really even a kink anyway. Butbutbut...Itwouldbe SO COOL!

Similarly, I'll keep in my heart a prompt I read long ago that was awesome, but never filled.

So, ITT, we post things like that and discuss them. Heck, who knows, maybe somebody will end up writing a fic inspired by these non-prompts. Or we can just bounce the ideas around until we're satisfied!

I don't have any non-prompts to share right now but I know just what you mean and I like this idea.

Alright, there's 2 unfilled prompts, posted over at the court of appeals even, that I would love to chat about. They are as follows:

(1) Post-Keene, Ror basically gives Dan the cold shoulder for like 15 years. And then it happens- Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds. In New York. Madness reigns, people getting pecked to death by armies of pigeons, Canadian geese beating up children and old people- what's the city's last vigilante to do?...Rorschach has only one person to turn to, the fat, whimpering liberal who also happens to be a brilliant fucking ornithologist.

THAT IS EXCELLENT. What the hell would they do? Would Dan use his knowledge and nerd magicks to lead the birds elsewhere, like a benevolent pied piper? Or would he have to give up his soft diplomatic liberal ways and just kill some birds? Also...Was Adrian behind it all along?!

(2) I want Walter and the Roche family to be acquainted outside of the kidnapping case. Like, Mrs. Roche going to the same laundromat and little Blair liking to play with 'the funny looking man with the ( ... )

Really, I have a knee-jerk reaction against angsty prompts, because it's like THIS IS FUCKING WATCHMEN, HAVEN'T YOU HAD ENOUGH?!

But I like the basic idea. If I took this one it would become sugary pink fixit because that's what I do. I think it's partially because I'm clinically depressed and unhappily single, so I'm already a ball of angst and don't need anymore.

This is something I've been wondering about for a time, and I think it's a matter that should be handled with care because it can and has hurt people's feelings. Let's avoid that please - be polite if you want to express your annoyance ( ... )

I've never given it much thought, really. In my early years on the internet I was a reg at a forum that eventually became hyper-concerned with the identities of the posters (after a while, there wasn't even a discernible 'clique' of popular posters, it was just a scream-filled abattoir of retarded children all vying for attention). It completely killed the fun for me and I left for the anon-dominated *chans.

I love anonymous, but I'm not bothered when people on the KM de-anon. I tend to not remember their name or icon anyway, unless they're de-anoning because they've posted a series I'm reading and want it to be easy to find. On 4chon, people often get flack for trying to carve out an identity. While it fits with the culture there, I see no reason to give shit to anyone here about revealing who they are and building a persona based around their postings. (I'm too forgetful of names to bother really keeping track of who anybody is, though, haha). I, too, sometimes get curious about poster's identities and sometimes want to chat with ( ... )

"Another factor is, even if people start out posting anon, we can come to recognize them by their styles or their universes or their choice of subject matter. In those cases, depending on how recognizable the tells are, there may not even be any point in posting anonymously."

Very true. A certain author comes to mind with this; her style is so distinctive that after anon-failing the first time, remaining anonymous on her other stories would have been pointless. This isn't a bad thing, it's just true in some cases.

However, I don't know how I feel about anons de-anoning for everything they do, particularly if their...I guess I'll say, if their authorial voice isn't strong enough for a reader to automatically attach everything they write to them.

There's also the fact that people can become annoyed by repeated identifiers such as names or icons or habits of writing, and being able to attach these consistently to a particular identity allows people to develop personal dislikes very quickly.I don't dislike any anons personally, but ( ... )

I have such mixed feeling about the anonymity of the meme. I love the idea of anon writing and posting- there's something really unique and appealing about not knowing, and maybe never knowing, who wrote something. On the other hand, I like guessing at authors. I have guesses for authors for most of the long epics, and I have a mental shortlist of oneshots that I'd love to know the authors of. It does make me happy to see someone claim a fic I love, if just so have a more concrete place to direct my love. :)

In the end I think I prefer people stay anon on the meme itself and claim it when crossposting to comms or their journals. Best of both worlds, or as close as I can get.

So there's a popular fic with a bunch of comments. Does it annoy you if the author responds to every reply? Is it rude if they don't? How about only some; the ones that lead to meta/have something to address or discuss?

Does it feel like precious meme space is being wasted? Or pff--we can just make another.

I'd rather authors didn't respond to every comment, more for load time purposes than for space saving ones. Like you said, we can always create another meme. The problem arises when one thread on a page has a good twenty or so comments, and that combined with all the other posts on that page drags it load time to a crawl, if it loads at all. The number of near inaccessible pages on KM1 was a lesson learned in that.

It's not so bad now that people break their stories up into more pieces. Still, I prefer it when authors respond to the comments that ask a question or offer an insight rather than every single one.

Well, I like to reply on comments whenever possible, just as a point of couirtesy to the people who actually took the time to comment - and because I get a big boost from comments and want to show my gratitude. :*) Still, it's a valid point that a bunch of replies can kill a fic's load time on the meme. I've compromised a couple of times by just posting an "author sez" reply to all comments above it - particularly if they're mostly short YAY-type statements. I've also done a generic "thank-you" in the Updates thread as a means of acknowledgement. It's just something I tackle on a case-by-case basis.

Writing bigass epics the way I do, I get a high volume of really nice comments, and I always feel like a dick for not replying to them all, but there are two points to that:

1. Finite space. We only get our 10,000, and I'd like a lot of that to be content, not just me saying 'thank you'

2. Lack of comment content. What do you say to UNF other than 'yay, the pornography worked! =D'?
