Some science fiction cliches need to die

I watch a lot of sci-fi, and I can usually get into just about any sci-fi show especially if it is a space opera or cyberpunk show. No matter what show you can think of there has always been at least one instance where the main characters go to some remote planet and you start to realize that this planet could really double for the turn of the ( Read more... )

I think the Nazi aliens were the ones that went into Earth's past to help the Nazis take over America in one episode. And then it turns out that they've been fighting against a league of Time agents for a long time.

As for why there's always the one planet like that.. there's probably always going to be that possibility that one planet undergoes just the right changes to suddenly resemble Pagan Europe..

Though, admittedly, that doesn't explain how they undergo every single right condition to get to the Wild West.

Roddenberry created Star Trek to teach simple lessons about morality. It makes sense that they'd pick things from Earth's actual past to do that, because it has a more profound impact on us.

And because of the Temporal Cold War in Enterprise, it had quite a few "back in time" episodes, where the aliens were trying to change the Earth's history.

I see where you're coming from, but seeing the alternative ways we could have developed as a race or as a planet is kind of interesting.

the enterprise episode was really good, although the time agents were a bit too much like Timelords from a certain other show :) . what actually brought it up was that I saw alien Nazis, and had assumed that they were Space Nazis like the old episode, I'm glad I was wrong as it was a good 3 parter.

If you haven't watched all of Enterprise, you should. A lot of trekkies seemed to hate it, but it was enjoyable, I think. The war part, anyway, lol.

The thing is, Nazis are the modern day Ultimate Evil. If you want to ascribe a characteristic to a group which immediately identifies them as antagonists in a culturally powerful way, Nazis are a quick path to some still sensitive memories. I wish people didn't thoughtlessly equate Nazi=Evil. It's the case, but it's not a synonym, one's a descriptor for the other. But maybe I'm splitting hairs.

Anyway, we should hang sometime. You seen Beowulf yet?

I'm not sure if my last message went though, so if this is a double ignore it, but no I haven't. I know that here at some point we want to see I am Legend, and possibly in the theaters up in your neck of the woods. I'll call you if we decide to. Hey also It's a while away, but we plan on going to naka-kon sometime in February, if you are wanting to do a con sometime soon.

Why Nazis? anonymous December 3 2007, 11:32:10 UTC
Writers sometimes need to take shortcuts to make the audience instantly understand what they are trying to convey. TV writers especially need to do it so they can crank out an episode or two by deadline ( ... )

I like the "space nazi" archetype, just not literal space nazis :)
