On the stove top that made up Henry's ongoing job search, substitute teaching had to be put on back left burner.  The school year in the southern hemisphere was just ending, and there was little subbing needed in New Zealand's schools.  Tutoring was also relegated to the back of the range, for similar reasons.  Occupying the high priority spaces of ( Read more... )

The general recommendation to anyone visiting Auckland, given by anyone who has spent any time here at all, is this: get the hell out of the city center.  Seems like the chapter on Auckland in the Lonely Planet should have this as a subheading, but they're the only ones to miss this pearl of wisdom ( Read more... )

Henry was in a pickle.  He had twice as much stuff as he could carry, and was trying to get onto the elevator that would carry him up to his 10th floor dorm room at the Auckland City Backpacker's hostel.  He had half of his belongings on the elevator, and was standing at the entrance to prevent the doors from closing as he started at the OTHER half ( Read more... )
