not even a spoiler, just a tiny spoilette

okay. watchmen.

abysmal.

could have been worse, but still. abysmal.

bad acting, bad dialogue, bad direction... and for a big-budget hollywood movie, really unconscionably bad makeup and cgi. and i am sick to fucking death of the rubber-fetish superhero costumes.

a few nice little touches here and there.

my favorite part of the movie (occurring in the ( Read more... )

Actually, Matt Frewer isn't bad casting for Moloch, in terms of being craggy, sickly and anxious-looking. But I've seen some screengrabs that make it look like they gave him crazy Spock ears. Moloch has subtly pointed ears, he's not the devil or something!

I am curious to see it, even if I know I'll probably be disappointed.

i know, i expected to not like it, but i had to see it anyway. and plenty of people who like the book seem to think the movie was okay over-all.

it was a little weird for me. a lot of times, when watching a movie i don't like, i can't help thinking of all the ways it should have been better, like seeing really obvious problems with really obvious solutions. with "watchmen", instead i kept thinking of all the ways it could have been worse. they got a lot right, even though i didn't like it.

Yeah, it seemed like a doomed enterprise. As somebody put it, "Watchmen really wants to be a comic." Somebody like Terry Gilliam would've probably put their own spin on it and maybe made a better movie, but then it wouldn't be Watchmen.

I think a consensus has emerged over the years that the only way to do the material justice would be a cable TV miniseries. I don't know why that's never happened. I doubt it will, since it seems like the film isn't doing too well.

a longer format, like a miniseries, would convey the story better, but to me, "watchmen" isn't about the story, it's about how the story is told. and you just can't tell a story in a movie/tv show the same way you tell a story in a comic book.

a well made miniseries would probably be fun to see, but i just don't think you could get the same effect that you get from the book.

I tend to stay away from very high-pitched movies (not as in sound - but as in overly pumped by both the media and by the common man who love the books or comics or whatever). I am waiting for DVD... if I think about it.
