Its as if they didn't think a plot was important, and that it was fine to just trash not only the character of Khan, but fans memories of Wrath of Khan, by making a bad parody of the reactor scene.
I admit I have not seen Wrath of Khan, but I gathered enough to know that he was supposed to be a powerful and challenging opponent. I really enjoyed the scene where he confessed he was doing it all for his crew because I was hoping that we would get a villain we could sympathize with (even if explaining his involvement with Marcus was a bit lacking). He actually did help Kirk a lot and there were allusions to their similarities which would have been a great basis to expand on, but they didn't take it anywhere. They had a compulsory show down fight and then simply crammed the big baddy back into a box after using and abusing him and went on like Khan never happened. I'm entirely sure this was not the message that the Star Trek universe and its fans deserved.
You should check out wrath of khan sometime, but suffice it to say, in the film, Khan has very good reasons for his personal vendetta against Kirk, and the film is about Khan being obsessed with defeating Kirk, to the point he's quoting Moby Dick, and the dynamic between the two is what makes Khan a great villain, I was thinking again last night of the scene where Kirk and Khan (in new movie) were getting from the Enterprise over to the Dreadnought, how nonsensical it was, and lacking in any sort of suspense or tension, and really? opening an airlock in a ship and the air just rushes out? Not to mention the freefall of the Enterprise and logic fail when it came to the anti-grav not working.
I know, right? The Enterprise crew were sitting ducks for about 90% of the movie and the poor ship was shot to hell so bad it was hard to imagine anyone survived. And then they just had to top it all off with the free fall and Kirk single handedly repairing a ship that was by all means and purposes a big can of holes. Because holes in space are like, not dangerous. At all. Even if they are on the visor of your space suit.
Not to mention the fact that from what I've been told, the ship's core was not supposed to be radioactive because that's not how it works. So it was only there to allow this stupid deus ex machina twist to work. Because IDK, happy endings are a must? They should have just killed Kirk for good. Hell, if for nothing else they should have done it to either crush or elevate Khan's character for the final fight.
