I had been looking forward to this ep quite a lot - a Western, and written by Toby Whithouse to boot! I'm not quite sure it lived up to my expectations however.
I was so meh about this episode. I liked the acknowledgment of Amy being a mother but it felt out of place because of the "let's not even talk about it and just get divorced because I can't give you children" plot that didn't even mention River in the first one. I was like lol, make up your mind, writers.
Gahhh the lack of consistency is so grating. I figure it could be fansplained away or fixed in fic... but I really don't care enough about the characters to do that.
Foolishly, I still have hopes for Clara when she comes aboard...
I agree on the whole pacing thing, I think that might have been the whole fall back of the episode. I kept thinking in the beginning that they had to end it on a cliffhanger or make it a two part-er--It would have had loads of potential if it had been that.
And, the Doctor becoming the town marshal, Hee, right after throwing Jex over the line and on a whim deciding to possibly let him back in. Great choice! ;)
(Am I the only one that thought using the word marshal was weird, by the way? I always thought of old west towns having a sheriff, maybe that's just a stereotype or something, but I tend to associate sheriff with running a town or city and marshal with something like the US Marshals?)
Yes it could have been an excellent two-parter! Then there would have been time to develop the characters.
Yes I was a little thrown by the marshal thing. *dons clever specs* According to Wikipedia, marshals were basically elected or appointed police chiefs in the Old West. Meaning this is actually a case of Doing The Research! Huh.
I... liked the episode well enough. It didn't make me *angry,* anyway, which was a nice change, lol. (is it sad that my scale of episode enjoyment this week is "I'm not angry, so this is a big plus?")
I agree that the pacing was off, but to me, the ep felt a little boring at times. ... not to say I want the whizz-bang of the last two, where I'm sitting there going, "wait, I don't even know why these things are happening?" We need a happy medium.
I really enjoyed the ep touching on points like the Time War and the Doctor's darkness.
So yeah, didn't love it, didn't hate it, just, meh, liked it, I guess. I'll take it :)
I liked the acknowledgement of Amy as a mother, especially the statement that it's not straightforward. It's something that should have been mentioned a season ago but still FINALLY!
And yeah, it was good to see Amy tell the Doctor he shouldn't travel alone. Just to see her say something that needed to be said was good.

Yeah, it was kinda boring, but also rushed. I think it could have been better in a two-parter. Either way it would need a lot of rework.
References to the RTD era always win points. :D
ETA: If nothing else, this ep provides marvelous footage for Firefly crossover vids!

I liked Amy in this ep, even if she didn't have much to do.
