The same thing happened to me with that series. My biggest gripe with the whole series is Kitai, actually. I get a little tired of that whole trope in fantasy where men are big dummies when it comes to anything interpersonal, and the women are always superior and knowing. It started annoying me with Robert Jordan, and I've noticed Kitai is another woman of the Nynaeve/Egwene/Elaine/Min/etc breed. :/ I think women are perfectly capable of being whole, complete characters who are strong and capable, without men who are always wrong or make stupid remarks or whatnot. But that's really a gripe I have against pop culture in general, the whole Awful Wedded Life trope, along with Parenting the Husband and whatnot. One reason I rarely watch comedy shows. :P

Edit: It's Kitai, not Kitiara. Kitiara was a way different female character. LOL

Although I'm only slightly more than halfway through the series, I have to agree with that sentiment so far. I have to wonder though - how much of that is also rooted in the Marat being sort of the stand-in for fantasy elves in Carna (although with less poncing than LotR elves, heh)?
