Chapter 01 Chapter 02 Reita had known Ruki a long time, but he had never known Ruki as a fifteen year old. This probably explained Reita’s current fascination with his friend. He kept glancing in Ruki’s direction as they walked to school together, only to turn away quickly as Ruki looked in his direction.
“You think I don’t see you looking at me, don’t you?” Ruki finally asked. Cursing inwardly, Reita fished his brain to try and find an excuse for his staring. Realizing Reita probably wouldn’t say anything anytime soon, Ruki asked, “What’s your problem anyway? Staring at me like that…”
“You just look… so small,” Reita said, but immediately regretted it when he felt Ruki pelting him with his fists. “I MEANT YOU LOOK VERY STRONG AND INTIMIDATING!” Reita shouted, trying to block Ruki’s attacks with his forearms. Finally managing to push Ruki away, Reita sighed and patted down his uniform to straighten it out.
“I hope you wake up short one day, fuckface!” Ruki said angrily.
“I’m sorry! It just sort of slipped out!” Reita defended as he threw his hands up. Reita paused and then started with, “Hey, Ruki,”-earning a grunt in response from Ruki. “Do we go to the same school as Uruha?”
“Who the hell is Uruha?” Ruki asked, scrunching his nose a little.
That made Reita a little anxious. What if Uruha didn’t go to the same school? How would he find him? He was running through different possibilities in his mind when he suddenly realized something: maybe Uruha just didn’t go by “Uruha” yet. That didn’t make sense, though! They had all picked out their nicknames together! He was hopeful, still, and asked, “I mean Takashima Kouyou… does he go to school with us?”
“Why the hell did you call Takashima ‘Uruha’?!” Ruki asked with a snort. “That sounds ridiculous, calling someone like that a nickname,” Ruki said, laughing a little more.
“Someone like that? What do you mean ‘someone like that’?!” Reita asked, but he never got an answer. They had arrived at the school and were walking into the building.
Turning around and walking backwards so he could face Reita as he talked, Ruki shouted, “I’ll see you at lunch, Reita!” and then hurried down the hallway. Reita watched in distress as Ruki disappeared. He felt so overwhelmed right now. Sure, he’d been a high school student before… but it had been a long time! Not to mention, he had no idea where he was supposed to be.
“OI! Rambo! Over here!” Reita spun around as he tried to find the direction that the voice was coming from. He saw Lorenzo peeking out from behind the door to a janitor’s closet. Reita glanced around to see if anyone was paying attention to him and then snuck into the janitor’s closet and closed the door.
“I have no idea what I’m supposed to be doing, Lorenzo!” Reita said, his voice clearly showing his distress.
“Calm down! That’s why I’m here, alright?” Lorenzo reassured and received a relieved sigh and a nod from Reita in response.
“Lorenzo,” Reita said as his eyes widened slightly, “I don’t know if you should be wandering around school! Don’t you think that’s a bit risky?!”
“Yeah… about that, I don’t think I ever mentioned this slightly important fact: No one but you can see or hear me. I pulled you into the janitor’s closet because I didn’t want people staring at you as you talked to what appeared to be thin air.”
“How thoughtful of you,” Reita said with a roll of his eyes. “But I’d like it if that didn’t happen, too,” Reita remarked dryly.
“Anyway, on with the fairy duties…” Lorenzo waved his wand and produced a sheet of paper, which hovered in front of Reita’s face. “This is your class schedule. Now, just try and blend in. It shouldn’t be too difficult since technically you’ve done this before.”
Grabbing the paper hovering in front of him, Reita hissed, “Yeah, but I’m a musician for crying out loud! I haven’t had to know this shit for years!”
“Listen up, Rambo!” Lorenzo instructed sternly, “You aren’t here for learning! This whole thing is just a way for you to fix your problem! That’s what you want to focus on. You just need to make sure you’re not suspicious. Blend. In.” After his lecture, Lorenzo snapped his fingers and disappeared.
Sighing, Reita carefully snuck out of the janitor’s closet, only to bump into someone. Gasping, he quickly apologized “I’m so sorry!”
“Reita, what were you doing in the janitor’s closet?!”
Hearing his name, Reita looked up quickly and gasped even louder as he saw who it was. “KAI? What are you doing here?!”
Kai’s face scrunched in amused confusion as he answered, “The same thing you are? Going to school!”
Reita’s eyebrows rose slightly at Kai’s answer. Taking in Kai’s appearance, Reita realized he also looked younger. Doing the math in his head, he figured Kai must only be sixteen-the same age Reita was supposed to be. Kai didn’t look much different. His arms weren’t nearly as muscular and his face looked a little younger, but Kai had a young-looking face anyway.
“Come on! I’ve been looking all over for you!” Kai said as he grabbed Reita by the arm and pulled him through the busy hallway. “Our class starts soon and you weren’t at our usual meeting spot!”
Deciding it probably wouldn’t be a good idea to mention the reason he wasn’t in their usual meeting spot was because he had no idea where that was or even that he went to school with Kai, Reita instead said, “Hey Kai, I have a question,” as he let Kai pull him where they needed to go.
“What is it, Reita?” Kai asked, turning his head around just long enough to glimpse at Reita and then turning back around to watch where he was walking. They reached what Reita assumed was their classroom entrance immediately after. Reita tugged on Kai’s uniform jacket so he would stay outside of the classroom long enough for Reita to ask his question.
“Do we go to school with Takashima Kouyou?” Reita asked, nervously wringing his hands. It was promising that Ruki was familiar with the name when Reita had asked him earlier, but the fact of the matter was that Ruki never actually said if they went to school together.
Kai tilted his head as he looked at Reita in bemusement. “Yeah, Reita. We do.”
His face brightening immediately, Reita asked, “Really?!”
Chuckling, Kai nodded and said, “Yeah, he’s in the same first period as us,” and pointed inside their classroom door at a boy sitting at a desk in the corner by himself. Reita nervously peeked around the doorframe of the classroom and looked in the direction Kai was pointing. Reita gasped softly at what he saw: Uruha. It was clearly Uruha, but just like Kai, Ruki, and even himself, Uruha looked much younger. The same as Reita’s, Uruha’s usually blondish hair was now his natural color of stark black. Something that really baffled Reita was the lonely air surrounding him. Reita was startled out of his observations as Kai asked, “Had you forgotten he was in here?” with a chuckle.
Laughing nervously as he tried to mask his slip-up, Reita said, “Yeah, I guess I had…”
“That’s not too surprising. It’s easy to forget he’s there, sometimes…” Kai trailed off.
“Wh-what do you mean?”
Kai shrugged and answered with, “I just meant that he doesn’t make his presence known. He’s very quiet, isn’t he?”-he chuckled-“He really tries hard not to be noticed. Eh, Reita… we should really get into the classroom now before we’re counted as tardy!”
Reita nodded and followed Kai into the classroom-glancing in Uruha’s direction as often as he could manage while trying to pay attention to Kai’s walking in front of him. Sitting down in the seat next to Kai, Reita slowly asked, “Can’t we… sit closer… to… the back of the room?” and then bit his lip.
“But we always sit here!” Kai said, looking at Reita in confusion.
“I know,” Reita lied, doing his best at blending-in as Lorenzo had instructed. “But today I’m feeling like a back-of-the-room type of student,” Reita countered as he glanced quickly in Uruha’s direction. Now that he had found Uruha, he couldn’t help but want to be near him as often as possible.
“Sure, Reita… we can move closer to the back,” Kai answered-still really confused by his friend’s behavior, but wanting to make him happy nonetheless.
“Great!” Reita said with a grin as he rushed out of his chair and hurried into the seat directly next to Uruha-causing Uruha to glance curiously at whoever sat down noisily in the desk beside him. Noticing Uruha’s eyes widen as he saw who it was, Reita grinned when Uruha quickly turned away from him nervously. He kept watching Uruha, sighing softly with contentment as he observed the younger version of his boyfriend-loving how adorable he looked right now. Kai was watching his friend curiously-not sure what had gotten into Reita to cause this sudden interest in the class loner. Uruha would turn to look at Reita every once in a while, but immediately turned away as he saw Reita was still staring at him.
Punching Reita in the shoulder lightly to get his attention, Kai whispered, “Reita, I think you’re making him uncomfortable. What is up with you this morning?”
Blushing a little as he grinned goofily, Reita said, “I’m just feeling good today.” Then he turned to Uruha and said, “I’m sorry if I was making you feel uncomfortable.” Glancing at Reita nervously, Uruha nodded quickly in response-still remaining quiet. “So, what did you do over the weekend?”
Uruha looked around the room-sure Reita must have been talking to someone who wasn’t him. When he settled his gaze back on to Reita and saw that Reita was looking at him expectantly, Uruha’s eyes widened and he pointed to himself, asking softly, “Me?”
Chuckling, Reita nodded as his faced beamed with happiness. “Yes, you!”
“W-w-well, I…”-Uruha cleared his throat before he continued-“I played some v-video games.”
Reita grinned even wider as he realized that even though this Uruha was only sixteen years old, had black hair, and seemed to be uncharacteristically anti-social… it was still the same Uruha that Reita was in love with.
