We dropped her.  We held out our hands into a bed and said "Go ahead, don't worry, we'll catch you," and there was a sound somewhere in the distance, off to the right.  And we all glanced aside, our hands separating and our arms lowering just that little bit.  And she fell...

The problem is that we are not set up as a society to catch people reliably. We attempt to pick up the slack as individuals, but we have jobs, children, etc. And sometimes we get burnt out, despite our best intentions.

In a less fucked-up, more compassionate society, she never would have been repeatedly set adrift with the expectation that someone would reel her back in and the tacit knowledge that the lifeline could snap at any time.
