Moving through the crowd with my parents, I search for the best vantage spot. Crowds are already gathered, but most of them are in lawn chairs. We will stand. We find a place, nice and clear, and stand in anticipation. I watch the group of men near us; they're chatting, smiling, shaking hands, calling each other "brother" and "man" and last names. All of a sudden, everything is happening at once, and yet, nothing seems to be really happening. I'm sort of overwhelmed, but my life seems, still, so very very . . . quiet.
I suppose that's okay. But still disconcerting.
This is what the Sovereign LORD, the Holy One of Israel, says . . . in quietness and trust is your strength . . . -

"Your butt is exactly five inches!" the older one yelled today, brandishing a yardstick as she pursued her giggling sister up the stairs. I have no idea what exactly was going on, but given that it was kind of an icky day to be outside, I let them be. At least for a little while . . .

I don't really remember when we met. I was really more friends with your across-the-hall neighbor, and to be honest, rather foolish and flirtatious with said neighbor. best boss ever
The first time I met him, I wrote in my journal,
He is indeed a great boss, like B. said he would be. But I am insanely curious about his background. He speaks perfect American-accented English, perfect (as far as I can tell) Hebrew, walks and dresses and acts like an American man, has a small tattoo between the thumb and forefinger of his left ( Read more... ) -

Today, I thought I was going to collapse, give up, burst into tears. Instead, I sat on the floor in front of the sink, cradled my phone to my ear, and listened to your voicemail over and over and over . . . until I felt safe again.

I'm not unselfish enough to be a mother. I can't do it, and I don't think I'll ever be able to. So, maybe I'll just avoid it altogether . . . as well as men who might want a family. -

Someday, I think I will write a book. It should be titled, "I Didn't Know Sharks Drank Lemonade," and Other Things Nannying Taught Me.
