[ the fourth of may, this day, was his birthday. but he was committed to the age of twenty-one forever, so it wouldn't do to make a show of it-- not that he would have done so regardless. now, he was turning twenty-one for the fourth year in a row as far as he was concerned

It isn't the amount of time that's important, but what one does with it. If you do things that are good, your days aren't wasted.

[ but maybe in the end he'd look back on that stuff and change his mind. time was the only thing that was very telling in that way. ]
And shouldn't a normal person think it's lonely to be away from their family and friends on their birthday?

[ he sounds like he's smiling; the next line, inviting ]
Yes, they should. Is there a particular reason you're bringing this up now?

[ otherwise he'd be lonely, right? he wasn't, mind you, but if he was it would hardly be more appealing to spend his birthday with so called "family and friends."
ah, Splendor. what a place. ]

No.
[...At least he gets to the point?]

Really? But what about if the people you care about back home can't be with you to celebrate?

It would make no difference.
[Which is to say, Shin doesn't really celebrate his birthday.]

You don't mind being alone? Yeah, I don't mind it either. I'm kind of surprised, though, since most people seem to place such importance on spending holidays and things like that with family.

more strange human words? SHE MUST LEARN ABOUT THEM IMMEDIATELY.]
Birthdays? What do you do on those days?

You don't know what a birthday is? It's the day you were born, so people throw parties and give gifts, things like that. It's kind of a family occasion, so it's a little sad to be all alone on that day-- or at least that's the general sentiment.

... it sure seems like humans love to throw parties, though.]
So... [she thinks for a moment longer, connecting the two ideas in her head.] Um, it's like your wriggling day! The way you described it is purretty diffurent from what I've always done... but this is great! Now that I'm here, you're not alone.

Ah, well. I never said it was... [ his birthday. but it is, so. ]
I said it was the "general" sentiment anyway. Being alone on this occasion doesn't bother me-- at least, alone in a personal way. If there are humans around at all, I'm satisfied enough. There's always going to be something to observe.

[A huff]
Don't...really like it here. But home was exciting. And worse.

Er. I mean. Here is too...but there was more bad stuff at home.

Huh. I don't know if my birthday's passed while I've been here. Maybe? [She's... actually never thought about it until now.]
Reply
[ maybe she just didn't keep track of the date? it seemed unbelievably careless. ]
When's your birthday? Do the days run together that easily here?
Reply
[A pause.]
It's not that... I just don't know when mine is in the first place.
Reply
[ ah, well, it doesn't really matter though. ]
You could always make one up, couldn't you?
