Meg: "You didn't ask very nice."
Dean: "Where's our father, Bitch."
Reply
"What did you say, Sammy?"
"Nothing."
"That's not what you said."
"Ow! Leggo! Okay, fine, I said 'fuck.' "
"You don't say that, Sammy."
"Why not? You do. And Dad does too, I've heard him."
"Yeah, well, you don't."
"Hypocrite."
" 'Fuck' is for big shit, Sammy, like when a poltergiest is throwing you into a wall or something. Not for dropping your notebook in a puddle."
"I wouldn't have dropped it if you hadn't pushed me, Dean!"
"I wouldn't have pushed you if you hadn't been bitching about Dad and parent-teacher conferences, Sam."
"..."
"What was that, Sam?"
"I said, fuck you, Dean."

Sam: No sir. Not before everything.

Ruby is holding out her arm, knife slicing slowly, sensuously, across the skin. She's looking at Sam the whole while, dark eyes dancing with promise.
Just a moment.
He thinks (because by now he's got a right to be mellow) that he walks a thin line: a line that divides Ruby and blood and the world from Dean and love and desperation. Sometimes he isn't sure whether he's walking the line at all; if he isn't just falling headlong into either side.
(because if the world is wrong then Dean is right but if Dean is wrong the world is right)
Other times the line is dread, a tiny black parasite that twists in his guts as he leaves Dean in the dead of the night to exorcise another demon; as he ignores Ruby's calls and sidles into the Impala with his brother. It tells him, always: the other side is right.
He thinks that's the cruelty of walking the middle line.
Then the moment passes; as Ruby's blood wells and flows (red and thick like a glacier on the brink of a cascade), he realises there is no line ( ... )

I like how you made it transition from what I thought was a season 4 story into a Sam-in-hell. Wasn't expecting that at first. Very effective. Awesome job. Thank you!

Actually, I had this in my head as a missing scene from 4.21: When the Levee Breaks, with halluci-Ruby and an extra side of halluci-Alistair (and because I wanted to capture the s4!Sam mindset), but your interpretation could work pretty well, too. :) That's the joy of these little stories, I think.

Who would have thought that I'd ever say those words, huh? Least of all me.
Yeah, maybe that's why I'm whispering. It's not like I'm gonna wake you up. At least you're in there. Could probably bring a herd of elephants through here, man, it's been three days.
Been waitin' a long time to see you. Never thought I would...
The thing is, you're not gonna be you. Not really. Not like before. I've been living with that for a while now and ... I was kidding myself, hoping that you'd be okay. That things would be the way they were before. They never are. I wanted to get you back without a mark on you and I should know better than that by now, better than anybody.
You were right. I don't wanna risk it. I keep sitting here, keep waiting for you to wake up and...
Now I don't even want you to remember me.
I don't want you to, Sam.
Don't wake up. Please.
We can't be any more human than we are right now.
