43 out of 99 - if I don't count 1984.

How did you do?

*edit* I should be clear about where this list came from. These are the best-loved books in Britain according to a BBC poll.  Not necessarily great literature (Hello Bridget Jones!), but regarded affectionately by the Brits.

Not a best-of, but a best loved!

I don't think The Art of War or The Prince count as works of literature. They're more like "How-to" books.

64...but I hate this list. I feel like someone took a lit curriculum from a high school and a list of the bestsellers from the last 5 years and smushed them together into one list. There are numerous multiples from authors (5 from Charles Dickens? Really? Is that necessary?) and too many children's books, in my opinion.

It's also too brit/american centric for my tastes. 12 of these were originally written in languages other than English - 4 in French, 3 in Russian, 3 in Spanish, 1 in Italian, and 1 in Hebrew & Greek. So there's no German literature? Japanese? Chinese? Indian? Arabic?

Anyway, I've read 64 of them. :-)
