GNOME Shell

I'm really trying to be patient with GNOME 3. I remember when I switched from Enlightenment, but I just keep running into really annoying issues.

Issue 1: Multi-monitor support isn't working right at all. (Bugzilla 695737I have a LCD monitor mounted on a stand above my desk at work that is connected to a docking station. I put my Thinkpad T500 ( Read more... )

I know it isn't what you meant, but just one word: Alt+F9.

I really like where Gnome 3 is headed, but I agree with you, it'll probably be Gnome 3.4 before it's had those rough edges polished.

I'm hit by 4, 5 and 6.

Also my laptop is a Dell one without lights for caps lock, num lock, etc; so I need an applet for that. Guess what? I can't use applets on Gnome 3 because they'd got me distracted!

2) yes. it's icons. this is already known and discussed in multiple mailing list threads, where it's been stated that it's being worked on.

3) "I suspect once I point that out in public, the right click minimize option will disappear too." - erm, no. the option of doing it this way was specifically mentioned in the threads on why the buttons could be taken out, as a justification for doing it (i.e. you can still minimize if you REALLY REALLY WANT TO, but the obvious-button-for-doing-something-not-very-helpful-in-most-cases, and its potential for confusion, is gone). as someone else points out, there's also a keyboard shortcut.

6) it's not done yet.

How do things like Chromium do it? anonymous April 13 2011, 07:02:31 UTC
Programs like Chromium face a similar problem in a different form when doing things like searching your history as you type in the location bar. Somehow it does something progressive that doesn't involve distracting reshuffling - perhaps something based on this idea could be used in GNOME 3?

Or, you don't default to showing all apps.

I find it difficult to believe that the act of generating a list of possible apps and loading their icons is something that must be done simultaneously, or with the latter blocking the former.
