Yuletide 2008 recs, round 1

Dec 31, 2008 01:36

I have been in Shanghai basically since the Yuletide archive went live, and while I was able to sneak away to an internet cafe to frantically download stories every day, I forgot about the Great Firewall of China and how it keeps out LJ! In other news, I think this made me skip over a ton of stories I would have otherwise liked, because the feeling ( Read more... )

*editted for realizing I'm not sure about the rules of publicly revealing what you've beta-ed*

The Skip-Beat story is one of my favorites of the few stories I've managed to read so far, and I'm not sure, but I think you're the only reason we even got Cantarella fic.

I haven't had a chance to really look at most of the stories I've betaed, and except for one that I was getting in snippets and rewrites as it was being written (which was awesome and I anticipated it more than I have words for, once the author figured out which character's voice to use) I got them all fairly close together (around a dozen total), so I wasn't really able to go through them as carefully as I would have liked to. I'm terrified that I'll read one and see something huge that I missed.

I knoooww! I want to make things better by writing a happier future fic now. Also, I now feel incredibly guilty for not knowing all my stuffed animals' names.

Thank you so much for reccing Red Sky by Morning. It was written for me and I think it's absolutely marvellous, but obviously not so many people are familiar with Chinese mythology as with Greek and Roman, so I worry it won't get as much praise as the author undoubtedly deserves. I was very lucky this year - the two stories I got are so good it gives me as much if not more pleasure to see them recced as the stories I actually wrote.

Not a problem at all, and I'm really hoping that it gets more people to read about Mazu and that there will be more Chinese mythology stories next year (haha, I am the one who nominated it as a fandom and put Mazu in the list of characters and mis-spelled her name, so clearly I have vested interest...).

Thank you, then, for nominating it - it hadn't occurred to me till I saw it on the list, all forlorn with no requests. Hopefully, as you say, there will be more next year. I admit I did wonder about the spelling, but I assumed whoever had put up the nomination knew better than I...

Oh, no problem! It was a lovely read, and I am such a sucker for Attolia.
