Who's familiar with the phenomenon that is the new russians? Unless you're russian, you probably don't know what that is. It's the Russians that recently got wealthy and are now living it up all over the world, preferably in the most glamorous places. They can be distinguished by the overly trashy/labelly things they wear and the insane amount of ( Read more... )

yes there is a huge gap in America but the difference is, the poor people have as many chances to get educated and to get work and start businesses as are the rich. Of course the rich have better opportunities but nothing stops the very poor from bettering their own lives. In Russia the poor simply didn't have the option.
This post was just to give some examples of what life was like under communism, from recent discussions in my comments about socialism/communism. Just wanted to highlight the difference between theory and practice of these ideas - it's everything.

unfortunately, i wonder if things continue the way they are in the US right now, it might resemble something closer to the Russia you don't think so fondly of, and not in the United States that you are looking forward to coming to. i realize there is a great ocean of difference in the two, and i don't mean to minimalize or discredit your memory by making that comparison.

you give an excellent anecdotal example of how communism or socialism never seem to work out the way they are idealized. i wish someone would explain that to our current administration and those that support them...but i will refrain from becoming too political.

it's always interesting to read your point of view, and in your descriptions of life in Russia...although you don't talk much of it, and you've mentioned why in this post. as usual, thanks for sharing.

Like zenboy said,America has its own problems. Though that does not mean I'm trivializing what you or others went through. It sounds miserable.Lives like that arent nearly as common here, though they are here.

It may be poor and miserable but the people are way awesome. Well some of them anyway - they're so much more friendly than in Australia where everyone is standoffish. I miss that!

The rougher life is, the more people tend to stick together. I'm glad you have some good memories of it.

wow what a fascinating insight into the Russian lifestyle! :)

You should write a book, I'd love to read it!

Oh and my word I know about 'new' russians. They are about as gaudy and tasteless as the new saudis! or more specifically people from Dubai, UAE or like the rich people in China.
The new Russians seem to spend their money ridiculously on things like jewellry and watches and cars. It's like anyone with new money. People who are really rich and have been for a long time show less of a need to show off. It's a bit silly really.
