Oh my gosh - I had quite forgotten ABDUL .. it's all coming back to me now. What lovely choices! How old were you when you first heard these, can you remember?

I don't remember a time where we had not heard these...
My dad read these to us our entire lives.
And when we had children, my dad gave us our own copy to read with our children.

I remember - he would always scare us with Little Orphan Annie... he would read with a super soft voice until he got to the goblin part, and then he shout out that part and we would screech and giggle wildly.

You have kind of hit on something there - one of the reasons why books in childhood stay with us for so long and with such strong emotional attachment may be because we associate them with precious moments of intimacy with our parents (and now, with our children).

Sorry, I'm generalising. I should say, in my experience ...

Thinking about this made my day.
Thanks.
Seriously.
Now - let me see if I can catch my dad on the phone.
