AFF 2007 Con Report

Apr 05, 2007 14:24

I'm going to make this entry public, just because... well... it's pretty much public information anyway, and I do want people who aren't on my friends list to be able to view the entry, too.

Anyway, without further ado, here's my ( uber-long AFF 2007 Con Report. )

Hehe, thanks!

And yes, of course-- it'll probably be about the same time of year next year (mid to late March), so start freeing up your calendar, and saving money to bribe commission artists now, eh! ;D

I had a lot of fun when I was there. Thanks a ton for bringing furcons back to the Northwest.

I really liked the intimate feel of the convention. It was really cool for me, some random dude, to be able to kick it with staff members during a late night cool down. I do have to apologize, I was in odd form for the whole con; I was just a little 'off' the whole time. I am normally much more gregarious than I was this weekend.

I learned a lot about working the dealer's hall, as the size of the convention meant one had to *really* be prepared. Next year, I plan on getting a table as well.

The hotel was very pretty, but a bit small. This isn't really a complaint, it just is the way it is. Hopefully your success won't overstrip the abilities of the hotel! That being said, the hotel staff was incredibly helpful, and I really appreciate the hard work they did for us.

Thanks again, SR. The hard work you and the rest of the staff did made it a wonderful weekend. Here's to next year.

Hey Jirris! I'm sorry you didn't do as well in the dealer's den as you'd hoped. The con definitely was a learning experience in many ways, eh.

And... I didn't notice anything particularly /wrong/ with you when we were hanging out. But for future reference, excessive gregariousness is definitely welcome at these events and in company that includes me. ;)

And yes-- here's hoping we're able to have an even bigger success next year!

Thanks for your rundown. I'm hoping for next year. It was one of the best "con" experiences I've ever had regardless of the variety of genres out there. The numbers were perfect and the venue was near-perfect. If, indeed, your staff had as little experience running a con as you say, then THAT is the magic ticket. Maybe people know 'too much' sometimes and cause more stress. The staff was perfect. The schedule can be tweaked a bit, but nothing was negative by any means.
*hugs*

Hehe! Well, none of us had done it before... and nobody let their ego get in the way of good common sense and helpful advice among the con staff. I hope we're always able to keep things like that.

Thank you also for hosting a panel! I really would have liked to attend-- it seemed like you had a lot of really interesting stuff prepared! (If you're willing to do something similar at next year's con, I'll do my best to attend it, eh!)

"Lack of ego' yeah, THAT'S that tisket that most cons miss!

I'm hoping for a chance to do the panel for the furry crowd again. It was just a plain good friendly time. I've gotten a lot of inquiries about it.
By the way, a lot of the resources that I used or mentioned are posted on the AFF website under the panels section in case anyone asks. There's a lot of good stuff. Not all of it by any means, but good stuff.

I wouldn't say it's lack of ego so much as lack of priorities. It's important to have a healthy ego about your convention, enough to know that even if it's not the largest or the best, that it is worth going to and thus worth doing what it takes to keep it that way. I've seen cons hit a good point and then try to coast on popularity. I've seen cons struggle with the fact that they're not the very highest in attendance despite throwing all their resources into it, never aware that it just might be an attitude problem that makes people want to go elsewhere. It's a priority issue, a lack of the right sort of enthusiasm and honest work. AFF certainly had none of these problems, and having spent time with the other staff, I think I can safely say that the only person who might ever have an ego-and-priorities issues would be me. *grin ( ... )
