I wasn't in "upper classman housing" as a freshman but I was in Calvert Hall, which is more or less officially an "upper classman dorm." That means that out of seventy-some-odd people living there, there were only five frosh guys and five frosh girls

If you're referring to the posts I think you're referring to, there are trolls out and about who just like to be nuisances. Really, I don't think you'll have many problems as a freshman living in WC, though I agree, a first year in the dorms is pretty great because you get to meet loads of new people. Not that you couldn't/wouldn't in WC, but I feel like when you're in a suite you don't actually *have* to go out and see people and meet people and hang with people other than your housemates. Then again, since usually it's sophomores and upperclassmen in suites and such, they've already selected out their best friends and are likelier to live/stick with them. So just make the effort to go out and meet people -- and for the people living in Dorch or QA, they don't have AC so you might as well invite them back to cool off

WC is a far walk from EVERYTHING (there's even a facebook group, haha) so a bike is useful, unless you like to walk. unfortunately, there are some real jerks at st. mary's so i second the "don't forget a lock" advice.
(the dorms were a great experience for me as a freshmen, and i did have a few friends who were lonely in upperclassmen housing - i.e. WC, LQ, etc. - so my recommendation is to try to make the switch, if possible. if not, just be prepared to make the most of your classes as a way of meeting people)
As for cell phones, if no one has told you this already, you'll want to get Verizon. It's the only one that really reception here consistently.
And yes, less is more. You really don't want to have too much stuff, even in a suite (and there is a good chance you'll get put in a dorm your sophomore year, anyway). You will especially appreciate this a year from now when you are moving out of your room . If it turns out there's something you desperately need that you can't borrow from someone else, there's always Target and usually somebody with a car who is willing to make a target run in the first few weeks. You really don't want to overpack.
