Palm Reading
For hours I scrubbed, raking the layers
of tissue from my palms, filing the white
bone and pink sinew until the ends of my wrists
resembled a dead oak loaded down
with the feather tips of dying crows,
the slough strung together with the comfort
of rusted barbed-wire. It was your hands I saw
when I looked down, tried to pray,
