I'm pretty sure "gay friends" don't mind if you just call them "friends". Or I guess you could always point out that you're going to watch your heterosexual friends band.

well if anybody was going to point out a fault in something i say it would be you. but suffice to say that gay culture is different from heterosexual and as such is an experience in and of itself. beyond that i don't really have many gay friends and i'm looking forward to it on that basis as an alternate dynamic.

Actually the assumption that 'gay' is an all encompassing mono-culture IS problematic for the reasons Tim pointed out. I think by culture you're really only reffering to sexual preference, which isn't particularly important to point out when referring to someone as a musician.

He isn't actually a musician he is a lawyer. I guess prolly the fact that he refers to his activities in the form of "i am going to a gay wedding", "i'm having a gay/lesbian housewarming" etc may well have become a habit of communication that has become engendered in my mode of speech. Yet if i had referred to him as goth that kind of labelling of a culture wouldn't have been a problem.
