I have tended to hang out in groups that have been very strongly male-dominated: groups like gamers, computer geeks, mathematicians, philosophers. But when I traveled around Scotland, I socialized nearly exclusively with women: they were more likely to engage me in conversation, and frankly, I felt safer with them. Definitely. I think the fact is that there are sometimes threats for men going into female spaces, but they're treated as though they're illegitimate for men to respond to. If they participate, their sexuality is in question; if they don't participate, their courage is in question. I think the pressures come from slightly different groups, so it's not quite the lose-lose situation I'm describing, but the pressure's still there for individuals to try to cope.
