Thank GOD you're alive! please write more and tell us how and where you're staying. hermitbird made it to N.C. before the storm. She might be back in NOLA by now, haven't heard.
I am so sorry your house got hit. I can't imagine the magnitude of losing everything.... and your art! your art is gone? and your supplies! I'm just glad you and family are in one piece.
For the first few days and even into last week I kept saying well maybe it just missed our house, but the pictures don't lie. Yes, the artwork and supplies are gone, as are all of the guitars, books and my daughters shoe/purse/mint tin collections. But really here the important thing is that we are alive, together and fine. Stuff is stuff I made some before, I can make more now. I just feel anxious about the finances and how we can possibly start all over again and pay off another whole mortgage for a house. I wish I had sold and/or given every one of those paintings away, at least they would not be gator bait. That said glad to see you my friend.
What a harrowing story. I know that even with all the news coverage Katrina has gotten, the stories still continue to freshly horrify. Like the Superdome-- nobody really knows what was going on in there unless they were THERE as your friends were.
