This evening I traveled to N. Dixon street to hear our superintendent, Vicki Phillips, deliver her proposed budget to the board. Initially, I was rather annoyed that I was taking the time out of my life to go, but now I'm glad I went. It was really interesting to hear what she had to say. I agree. I think Vicki Phillips is doing an okay job in a horrible situation, where no solution is really best. I certainly don't envy her. I also think that I am so sick of hearing from PPS that teachers have more benefits than anyone, and from teachers that they make less money than anyone. Can't they combine the two, and realize that it's probably about average! (I actually don't know that, but they should combine the two before making a comparison.) Ms. Culpepper is very guilty of that. But I do think Vicki Phillips is getting a little more crap than she deserves, since really no decision is a good one, and she knows it. I also think that she's really dedicated to making PPS work, because it's one of the last, if not the last, good urban school district, and if we can make it work, we can be a model to other cities.
