GIFT HORSES
At first Connor had avoided walking on the roadway, but it was easier on his feet and as long as he jumped out of their way he might have been invisible to the riders and drivers passing. So it was a shock when a smartly liveried carriage drew up directly ahead.
“This is a welcome, if unexpected, encounter,” said the occupant, stepping down and eying him with curious intensity.
“I had…an accident.”
“So I perceive. And all alone?”
Connor nodded.
“Please allow me to assist you.”
Relief swept through Connor and he responded with undisguised gratefulness. “Thank you, Mr Leek.”
