Jenny didn’t have to tell Connor that Ryan was returning today. It was obvious from the lilt in her step, the glow in her eyes and her air of anticipation.
They were playing chess when the door knocker clattered. Jenny jumped up.
“Don’t move,” she ordered.
Connor had no intention of interrupting their reunion. Ryan was calling Jenny’s name. He summoned a smile, “I think Captain Ryan has missed you as much as you’ve missed him.”
“Impossible!”
Left alone Connor surveyed their game without interest. Returning footsteps sounded. He looked up expecting Jenny or Ryan.
Becker walked into the room.
