London:

Becker poked at the fire. He’d promised he’d give Connor time but the waiting chafed. One month. No more.

Abby and Jess surveyed the invitations crowding the mantelpiece.

“What a shame you have to go home,” Jess pouted.

Abby frowned. “Lester wouldn’t ask if it wasn’t important.”

Oxfordshire:

“Alone again,” said Jenny. The fire lent her skin a rosy glow.

Ryan reached for the ribbons securing her dress. “I’ve been waiting to do this.”

Manchester:

A chestnut fell onto the hearth with an explosive crack.

Connor jumped. “Sorry!”

Lester retrieved the smoking kernel. “Why? Not everything is your fault.”
