Be careful what you name your cat...

So when you name a kitten... is it because that's the right name for that kitten -- or does the name shape its personality?

We named one of our "Pixie" kittens Alligator -- and it's uncanny how well the name fits him ( Read more... )

Names are funny things. The house that my husband shared with miz_hatbox and a bunch of other people in 1995 was named Chaos Central, and it ended up completely fulfilling its name. We had a house we named Plan B and it never did get any better than a Plan B.

So I don't know--I have trouble believing that things fulfill their names, but maybe we're more aware than we realize when we name them.

A swimming kitten is very cute, though.

If we'd known Myst better before we named her, we would have named her Gremlin or some such.

(rolls eyes in horrified recollection)

Oh, dear... Chaos Central.

Yes. Well....

*Sigh.*

Dunno which it is, but its often very true. see_tree_me May 11 2008, 19:33:19 UTC
Susan's kitties Muon (named for high energy particle) and Tuxcedo (this is what happens when dyslexics name things) like water. Tuxcedo especially.

The first time, well only time, she tried to discipline her using a spray bottle Tux's response was 'wow! a new toy!'.

Susan has to keep the water dish in the bathroom sink or else water is all over the floor all the time.

In my case Achilles and Athena are both very aptly named. Achilles of legend was selfish, loved his woman Brises and wouldn't share, and sulked when he didn't get his way. And Athena (goddess of wisdom) is a real wise ass.

Alligator's dad, Callan, is another Slosher whose water dish needs to be kept in the sink. (So, now that I think about it, genetics is at least partially responsible for Alligator's enthusiastic relationship with water.)

Callan had a similar reaction to Tux when it came to spray-bottle discipline. It didn't faze him at all, even when he was sprayed right in the face. He'd just squinch up his eyes and doggedly (cattedly?) stay on the counter, keep scratching the sofa, keep breeding the teddy bear, etc.

Have you tried him on raspberries and cream?

Nope... I'm really a selfish bitch when it comes to raspberries.

Besides, what if he liked them? I bet I know what'd happen :-)

*nods* I'm learning all too well about the power of names.

And I can't say as I blame you about raspberries. HUMAN FOOD, cat!

Oh man... sounds a little like my Finn! We named him Tom Finnegan (kind of a cross between Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer) and I think we got what we named him. He's got the most 'boy' I've ever seen in a cat, and he's mischievous as anything... likes to wake us up at 4am by biting our noses and attacking our hair with teeth and claws.

Well, Finn does just look like a troublemaker... it's written all over his face. I think his name fits him really well.

We have a mischievous youngster whose registered name is Zeus On The Loose. He started out as just Zeus, but when it became apparent that he was actually a monkey in a cat body, we added the suffix. There are days when Zeus just gets into things one after the other, in quick succession: a serial mischief-maker.

BTW, I meant to comment on this earlier and never got round to it; but I thought your Lyle was one of the prettiest cats I've ever seen. All black smoke elegance and a regal bearing... just gorgeous. Is he a Maine Coon? He certainly looks like one (quite a good one, actually).
